Apple has stopped signing iOS 18 and is only missing the installation of iOS 18.0.1, which includes important security improvements
Just a few days ago, Apple released iOS 18.0.1, the first update to iOS 18. This is a small update intended to correct errors, which we now know are very important. In addition, Apple stopped signing iOS 18, preventing the installation of this version of the system. In other words, you will only be able to install iOS 18.0.1 on your iPhone if you are still on iOS 17 or if you restore the iPhone.
When you install a new version of iOS on the iPhone, the device first connects to Apple’s servers which must verify the software and approve the update, which we call “signing”. That Apple stops signing a version of iOS means you won’t be able to install it on the iPhoneeven if you try to force it.
Apple’s goal with this strategy is that users always install the latest version of iOS availablewhich is as safe as possible. In addition to not being able to go back, this is called “downgrade”.
Why you should update to iOS 18.0.1 now
Hay two important reasons to update to iOS 18.0.1. On the one hand we have the official errors explained by Apple which are resolved with this update, they are as follows:
- The touchscreen may become temporarily unresponsive in certain circumstances on iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro models.
- The camera may freeze when recording video in macro mode on the 4K ultra-wide camera with HDR disabled on iPhone 16 Pro models.
- Messages may stop unexpectedly when you reply to a message with a shared Apple Watch face.
- Performance may be affected due to a memory allocation issue on some iPhones.
- Fixed an issue where audio messages in Messages could capture a few seconds of audio before the microphone indicator activated.
- Fixed a bug where VoiceOver could read a user’s saved passwords aloud.
But, in addition to all these errors, Apple later confirmed that iOS 18.0.1 fixes two more important security bugs
