Since its launch five years ago, Apple TV+ had been called an exclusive platform thanks to its content. Their series and films could only be seen on this platform and had never been broadcast on other platforms before. Yes, in theaters for the films, but the rest were original productions or acquired before the others.
But this paradigm could now change. At least that’s what recent events after the acquisition of the rights to a Spanish series that was on Disney+ and which Apple TV+ will welcome at the end of October.
“You Should Do It Too” will move from Disney+ to Apple TV+
If you’ve been a Disney+ subscriber for the past year and a half, you’ve probably seen “You Should Do It Too.” At the very least, you’ve encountered it, and it’s on the Mickey Mouse platform that it debuted. english series
Created by David Victori and Jordi Vallejo, this series has a a powerful cast of familiar faces for the Spanish and even international audience. Ana Polvorosa, Michelle Jenner, Pablo Molinero and Paco Tous are just some of the names that appear in this miniseries.
In their eight chapters We find a thriller whose protagonists are a group of police officers in charge of investigating an armed robbery that occurred on a bus that travels from Manresa to Barcelona. A plot that becomes more complicated as they discover inconsistencies such as the fact that the witnesses facilitate the escape of the only thief who came out alive.
The series is still available on Disney+, but will be on Apple TV+ on October 30. Its entire eight chapters will disappear from this first platform to move to Apple’s after the latter acquires the international broadcast rights. Therefore, it can also be seen dubbed and subtitled in other languages, although Spanish from USA will continue to be the original.
A new way to feed a much-criticized catalog
Apple TV+ has been praised on numerous occasions for the quality of its series and films. Obviously, there is something for everyone, although in general they are usually very exquisite productions with a specific seal of the platform. What has been criticized in these years is its limited catalog compared to other platforms like Netflix or Disney+ itself.
Apple had preferred to order original productions or, failing that, obtain the rights to them before being able to broadcast them on any other platform. From there come great successes like “Ted Lasso”, “Separación” or “Silo”.
This allows for a highly curated catalog in which to prioritize quality over quantity. However, They lacked a lot of the “filler” content that other platforms offer.. And, with all due respect to these productions and their fans (I’m personally a fan of two of them), in the end, not everything can be a million-dollar production and destined to be an absolute success.
NOW It seems that Apple TV+ is looking for profitability in acquiring rights. Each production is different, but in series of this mid-range it is usually cheaper to buy the rights to a production already made than to create everything from scratch. And even if for the moment they are starting to do it with a single series, it is significant to see how this could pave the way for the purchase of other productions already present on other platforms.
Maybe we won’t see a big move in buying a hit series still in production like “The Last of Us.” Especially since their original platforms, Max in this case, won’t want to let go of such a gem. Yes instead It seems at least likely that they could negotiate the rights to the series already broadcast and above all continue to add local content as is the case in USA with “You would do it too”.
