Apple will finally materialize a project that it announced months ago for its hardware parts. According to new reports, the company will start use random alphanumeric serial numbers. This is a change from the current serial number system that identifies things such as the date and place of manufacture of the product.
Even if Apple itself did not give reasons on the benefits, the main theories guarantee that the change would avoid counterfeits and other security problems. As noted by the company in a report obtained by MacRumors, this change will only apply to future products. And Apple says that this transition will take place “early 2021”.
Apple “hides” information on its devices
New random serial numbers will not allow Apple customers or service providers to collect related product information. This is 10 completely random alphanumeric characters, but the length could possibly increase.
Currently, Apple serial numbers are divided into several parts, as the report explains. The first three characters identify the place of manufacture. The next two characters represent the year and week of production. The last four are a “configuration code” to identify the product model, color and storage capacity.
Although for Apple this change would mean additional security protection, for users curious about the date of manufacture of the device or the country of origin, the information will no longer be available.
