For more than a year, the Apple Carplay site has tackled the arrival of the next generation in 2024. Now that it is 2025, Apple finally admits that this does not happen.
When WWDC was announced in 2022, a new generation Carplay was an exciting overview of the future of navigation systems in the dashboard. Instead of a rectangular screen, the new generation carplay takes up the entire dashboard, including car functions such as air conditioning and gauges. Apple says that Nouvelle Generation Carplay “provides a coherent design experience which is the best of your car and your iPhone – with conceptions for each car manufacturer that express the character and the brand of your vehicle.”
While it was originally to arrive in 2023, only two car manufacturers, Porsche and Aston Martin, announced real support for the system and neither the other has produced a car or even a concept of the real world stifling the interface. At the end of 2023, Porsche and Aston Martin showed images of their respective systems, with a series of digital gauges and a “background wall that imitates the brand's distinct seat model (or Pepita in Porsche-Speak)” And “a central information screen merculated by a circular speed counter and a tachometer, the latter which integrates the” enveloping text “built by the hand in Great Britain”.
There are a lot about the new generation carplay that we don't know yet, including if it will require an iPhone to work. At the time of its announcement, Apple still had to work on its own vehicle, and Carplay of new generation seemed to be a test to manage the group of instruments of a vehicle. But now that the project seems dead, we do not know how Carplay fits into Apple's ecosystem.
Apple finally deleted the text “Coming in 2024” of the Carplay website, but did not replace it with a new estimate. In a statement to the media, Apple said: “The next generation of Carplay is based on years of success and information obtained by Carplay, offering the best of Apple and the automaker in a deeply integrated and customizable experience. We continue to work in close collaboration with several car manufacturers, allowing them to present their unique brand philosophies and visual design in the next generation of Carplay. Each automotive brand will share more details as they near the announcements of their models that will support the next generation of Carplay. »»
It is much less specific than “to come in 2024” and implies that the project is much lower than Apple had it before. We could have our next preview from Carplay to WWDC in June, but for the moment, it is anyone who is guessing when the first cars could appear.
