We’ve had a few years where India has positioned itself to be another big Apple focus, especially now that China is losing its status as world factory by various factors. And we already know there has been data on stores and factories opening, but new leaks claim that even so we underestimated (and greatly) Apple’s plans in India.
The information comes from Mint: in Cupertino it intends to triple the production of the iPhone on Indian territory which will be reached this 2022. And it is said quickly, but multiplying a production capacity by three is not a joke. And that wants to be done within two years.
The next big revenue generator for Apple
The Economic Times adds the second part of the news: according to its editors, Apple wants to open 100 stores through a network of authorized distributors called infinity. It would not yet be an Apple Store as such, but a hundred new ones Premium Reseller
The idea is to open these stores in the most populated cities, taking advantage of their most commercial streets and their largest shopping centers. iMore gives us another piece of information that helps us understand the magnitude of this situation: Currently, the largest authorized Apple reseller network in India (Unicorn) has only 30 stores open. So suddenly a competitor with 70 more stores is going to come out.
As for an official Apple Store, the intention is now set for 2023 in a mall in Mumbai called World Drive.
All this would give India much (very) more importance both as a producer and as a sales market. Apple would thus have a source of income almost out of nowhere (remember the huge population of the country) which would contribute to the financial health of the company in times of uncertainty.
