Apple shares progress from its reforestation fund that supports organizations responsible for caring for and preserving South America’s forests

This year, Symbiosis aims to produce 1 million seedlings as part of its plan to maintain a working forest.

Those in Cupertino today share the advances of South American territories in terms of caring for nature and specifically for tree species threatened with extinction. Thanks to the Reforestation Fund, intended to fight climate change and protect ecosystems, new results are announced in collaboration with Goldman Sachs and Conservation International in which resources have been invested in three carbon removal projects in Brazil and Paraguay. In addition, they announce the incorporation of two partners into their manufacturing chain such as TSMC and Murata Manufacturing.

South America’s Atlantic Rainforest Protected Thanks to Apple’s Restore Fund Efforts

According to Apple figures, two-thirds of the 5,000 tree species found in the Atlantic Forest are in danger of extinction due to extraction and exploitation practices. With rainforest restoration powered by Apple, “Mother tree seedlings” continue to be cultivateda more resilient tree species made up of multiple species that contribute to the survival of the destruction of the forest itself.

Symbiosisone of the investments that are part of the Reforestation Fund, is responsible for collecting, storing and planting the seeds of mother trees of several species native to Brazil. It’s an effort that originated in 2008 and began operating in 2010. More than 160 species were first planted and continue to expand their efforts through the restoration of endangered trees.

Take responsibility for reducing the loss of biodiversity, Symbiosis is committed to conserving 40% of land with natural forests using these multiple species. The direct result is the planting of 800 hectares of forests rich in biodiversity in 10 years. The mission is now to plant more than a million plants over 1,000 hectares in 2024..

The Atlantic Forest is located on the eastern coast of South America, stretching from northeastern Brazil to southeastern Paraguay and northern Argentina. 500 years of deforestation have led to a depletion of the tropical forest by up to 80%.

Technology is also key to combining efforts

Symbiosis works with Space Intelligence to measure the amount of carbon stored in its forest

Symbiosis works with Space Intelligence to measure the amount of carbon stored in its forest

The symbiosis was supported by the use of technology. It leverages Space Intelligence, a company that provides nature data and monitoring systems to reduce risk and increase the integrity of funding for forest conservation and restoration.

They were able to calculate the carbon stored thanks to the creation of land use mapsthe satellite data obtained was integrated into the ForestScanner application, which take measurements using the iPhone’s LiDAR scanner.

Based on 3D maps created with the LiDAR scanner and the ForestScanner app on iPhone, Space Intelligence provides data on tree growth.

It is difficult work that depends on the efforts of all parties.. Symbiosis hopes to partner with indigenous communities, as part of the process of selecting suitable land for planting involves foreign lands. They hope to identify and harvest new seeds from mother trees on these lands.

Let’s not forget that Apple also sets an important objective, in 2030 they must achieve neutrality of their carbon emissions. Learn about all of the joint efforts in other parts of South America, especially Paraguay, in the following press release.
