In March, Google told us about the technology behind application archiving, Android’s latest invention to be able to free up space on mobile somewhere in the middle between uninstall or keep. Now, the company has confirmed that the archive will arrive with Google Play’s 33.4 update.
We got to see last month how app archiving would work on the user side, integration in Google Play as an alternative to uninstalling, but we don’t yet know when it will be available to users. Well, we won’t have to wait long. In fact, according to Google, we should already have it.
App archiving is coming to Android
Some apps take up more space than others and what you could do so far was to quit them or uninstall them and opt for lighter apps. Google has now prepared a third way for apps you use from time to time and you don’t want to uninstall, reinstall, and reconfigure them each time you need them again.
The invention is an old knowledge: the archiving of applications. The data is retained, but the APK of the application is replaced by an archived version, much smaller in size. By archiving an application you can, according to Google’s calculations, recover up to 60% of the storage space. If at any time we want to use the application again, press its icon to download it and open it again, and since it keeps our data, it works as if we had never archived it before.
For now, App archiving will be available on Google Playin Manage apps and device and now Google is telling us that the launch is imminent or, in fact, it should have already happened. The company lists “archiving apps for when you need extra space while still keeping your data” as one of the new features in Google Play 33.4, which began shipping “November 24.”
It’s been a few days and this version of Google Play still doesn’t seem to be rolling out to users (and it’s not on APKMirror either), but in any case, we have confirmation that application archiving is ready and we will have it very soon. As soon as our Google Play receives the next update.
