Some changes are radical, like the Coolwalk redesign, and others make you wonder if anything has changed or if they’re a figment of your imagination. The latest change goes in this direction, but it’s not imagination: Android Auto change icon style so that they adopt other shapes such as squares with rounded edges or “squircle”, the square circle.
From the beginning, Android Auto has circle icons, but overnight, these took other forms without seeming to follow any model or having the slightest option in the matter. In my case, my Android Auto displays the icons in the shape of a circle with rounded corners, while on Reddit they echo that their icons have the classic One UI circle shape.
New style for icons in Android Auto

Android Auto with its classic circular icons
Google has already made a major overhaul to the design of Android Auto, but the icons have remained the same. As you might expect, Android Auto uses system icons, although thanks to Android’s adaptive icons they can be adapted to any shape. Android Auto I used the circular shape for the iconswhether or not you have chosen another one in your mobile settings.
Now, as a surprise, Android Auto has started showing icons in other forms, without seeming to follow a logical pattern. For example, on my OnePlus mobile, it shows me icons in the shape of square with rounded cornerdespite This way the icons are configured as a circle.

And this doesn’t seem to be an isolated case. A Reddit user comments that his Samsung Galaxy S10e with One UI 4.1 (with Android 12) adopted the round circle shape circle, the default for One UI. In this case we do not know which form is configured in the mobile settings.
With Google without comment, we find ourselves with the eternal question of Is this intentional or is it a mistake?. If it’s a mistake, the truth is that it gives a touch of fresh air to Android Auto which never hurts, so we hope this helps Google consider letting us customize the system a little more with options like this, the way of the icons.
