The conversation about augmented reality, mixed reality and other similar technologies has gained traction in recent months, especially with the announcement of Apple glasses and the upcoming launch in Europe of the new Meta glasses. Both are capable of displaying content in mixed reality, inserting three-dimensional elements into our real environment.
But it is worth remembering that there is another company that has bet a lot on this technology: Google. Although Google Glasses was canceled and the head of augmented reality left the company very angry, the company still has projects in the works and today launched one of the most interesting.
It is Space Invaders: World Defensea game that mixes augmented reality technology with the gameplay of the classic 70s title. The result is an experience reminiscent of Pokemon Gobut with more strokes.
Google’s new game
Instead of challenging us to a series of predetermined levels, Space Invaders: World Defense it’s a free game relies on our location to create the levels, which we can see using augmented reality on our mobile. In other words, instead of confronting the invading aliens on a flat screen, these enemies will appear in our environment.
The app is able to use our location to show enemies around us; when we want we can start a shooting mode that turns the mobile camera into a peephole
As Pokemon Go, the game encourages visiting more places to find new enemies and improve our score; each zone will have a list of top players, so the incentive is to go exploring to try and beat their score.
This game uses the Google’s ARCore platform for augmented reality graphics, in addition to geospatial API to determine player and enemy location. It also allows you to change the game depending on the time of day or the weather in the area.
Google’s objective in launching this game is to serve as demonstration of what is possible with these platforms, so other developers can be inspired to create their own experiences. That’s why Space Invaders: World Defense It’s free and it’s already available on Android and iOS.
