When Elon Musk bought Twitter, he already warned curveballs were coming. Far from being content to maintain the social network as before, the millionaire intends to use it as the basis of a new app, which he simply calls “X”.
[Adiós, Microsoft Office: más de 30 años después, el mítico nombre desaparece]
The concept of X is that of a “Super App”, an application that may well be the only one you need on your mobile; And Musk isn’t the only one with such plans.
What will Super Apps look like?
The concept of a Super App is very vague, but that’s the idea: that it can perform all kinds of functions
It’s not just that Musk has taken over the apps that are hot right now. The purpose of a Super App is that we don’t need to use any other app on our mobile, so it makes sense to offer all sorts of features under the same umbrella.
At Microsoft, they believe this is the future. According to sources from Informationthe Redmond company is ready to take the next step in the evolution of Bing, turning it into a super application that includes all the services it offers, including Microsoft Teams and Outlook.
From a business perspective, it makes sense. Instead of offering a multitude of different applications and letting the user choose the ones they want, a Super App provides quick and easy access to services that we might not have thought of using.
If Microsoft knows anything, it’s to “force” us to use their services. Windows 11 comes with Microsoft Teams as standard, despite the fact that in its day it was born as an exclusive business app; And we’re talking about the company that dominated the browser market for over a decade, simply because Internet Explorer came preinstalled on every version of Windows. No wonder the Redmonders are drawn to the idea of the Super App.
Microsoft’s Super App would give us access to all sorts of services, including instant messaging, web search, shopping, news much more; however, its exit is still undecided and it is entirely possible that it will not materialize. But some within the company think it might be necessary to fight against Apple and Google, which increasingly control their platforms; especially the latter which offers exclusive features on Pixel phones to stand out from the rest of Android and fight against the iPhone.
