Expert note
Pros
- The fastest external speaker outside Thunderbolt 5
- Super affordable for 40 Gbit / s USB4
- Beautiful easy -to -access design with a silicon jacket
Disadvantages
- Thermal problems under a super heavy load with jacket on
Our verdict
The solid USB4 and beautiful CM850 of Oureen housing surpasses everything except Thunderbolt 5, and gives more than a race for his money in real world transfers. He also does it for much less money.

If you have bought Thunderbolt in your quick external mac storage quest, you will know that stickers' shock is often a process trap. You can reduce the monetary shock by passing your search to USB4, which, being an outgrowth of PCIe Sur-Fil technology from Intel, is just as fast as Thunderbolt 4.
And it is much cheaper than Thunderbolt, especially if you roll yours with something like the ureen CM850 NVME m.2 speaker.
The CM850 is a more affordable version of the CM642 of the university which uses the same ASM2464PD ASM2464 chip. It is a gray-arme gray-arme gray aluminum speaker which is approximately 4.75 per 2.1 per 0.6 inches and weighs 4.4 ounces.
Its HEFT is pleasant, as is the upper panel which appears to reveal the internal slit M.2 / NVME which supports 2230 (22 mm wide, 30 mm long) at 2280 SSD fixed by a captive screw. The panel has no small screws to manage (or lose).

Your Mac options for the performance of 20 GBPS / 40 Gbit / S are Thunderbolt 3, 4 or 5, which all involve much more expensive speakers and are not supported on most Windows machines. This can be important if you work in a mixed environment.
The addition of a NVME SSD to CM850 will cost you from $ 40 (256 GB) to $ 650 (8 TB), the ideal point being 1 TB ($ 60) to 2 TB ($ 160). Note that USB4 (or Thunderbolt elsewhere) cannot use the additional bandwidth provided by PCIE 4.0 or 5.0 SSDS. The SSD PCIe 3.0 disappear quickly, but the fact is that do not run too much.
Beyond that, avoid the SSD QLC if you regularly write large amounts of data and buy a DRAM design if you will run an operating system outside the reader or if you want higher random performance. However, the best shot for the male will be cheaper TLC Host Memory Me Muffer (HMB).

Ugreen CM850: Performance
The CM 850 is damn fast. In fact, overall, it is the fastest external SSD that we have tested. Take this with several grains of salt, however, because I populated the CM850 with the WD850X of 8 TB Ultra-fast for my tests.
In addition, the Thunderbolt 5 OWC sent ultra was much faster in the Mac synthetic references, although its real transfers were little faster than the SSDs with less haughty reference results.
The charming disk speed test, but generally quite precise of Blackmagicdesign, shows the 3 GBPS and you get both reading and writing with the CM850 – a suitably fast SSD inside.

Amorphousdiskmark (a port of original Cyrsaldmarkmarkmark) also displays many more transfers of 3 Gbit / s.

Atto Disk Benchmark says that CM850 is perfectly capable of using a large part of the performance that all SSD NVME will provide. Within the limits of 40 Gbit / s. PCIE 4.0 and 5.0 SSDs can go much faster than the 3 Gbit / GBPS USB4 and Thunderbolt 4.

I also executed the CM850 via the PCworld test battery, this is how this “fastest” assertion is supported.
Here are the results of Crystaldiskmark 8, as well as 48 GB transfers of PCworld and 450 GB of writing. These are all executed on the Thunderbolt 4 ports of the PCworld storage test bed, not a Mac. They always indicate higher performance – given a higher SSD NVME inside of course.
Overall, CM850 is the number one among all the external SSDs tested on this platform, the CM642 finishing a very close second. That said, the Adata SE920 and the OWC Express 1m2 are still both very fast readers who did not have the Uber Fast WD 8TB SN850X to help.

In the sequential performance (above) tests of Crystalsiskmark 8 and random (below), the CM850 worked very well.

The CM850, once again using the WD SN850X was the fastest external speaker that we have tested with our 48 GB transfers.

The CM850 has transformed the fastest 450 GB writing that we saw from an external reader. Keep in mind that the CM642 had the same 8 to WD SN850X inside.

I encountered a problem with the CM850. During the writing of 450 GB in the Pcworld tests, the reader would disappear with the English Channel. Without a doubt due to thermal problems, an internal fan or not. The withdrawal of the silicone jacket allowed him to finish, just like passing a fan on it.
Apart from that, I was absolutely delighted with the performance of the CM850. (Who other than PCworld regularly writes 450 GB?)
Should you buy CM850 University?
The CM850 (or its largest cousin CM642) is an absolutely fantastic means of adding a storage of 40 Gbit / s to your Mac without paying this heavy THUNERBOLT SURVAX. If you already have an SSD NVME, if you don't, buy one and have it. Good work, Ucreen.
