Airplane mode is one of the most useful functions of our mobile and, at the same time, one of the most annoying. When we activate it, our mobile closes all communications, and by this we mean ALL communications.

The device will be completely isolated, which is great in many situations. For example, when the pilot of our flight asks us not to use our mobile or to turn it off to prevent it from disrupting the aircraft’s communications. It was the original utility, and that’s where the name Airplane Mode comes from.

However, over the years, this original usefulness has been lost, so much so that airplane mode will no longer be mandatory in the European Union, since all new airplanes will be equipped with 5G antennas. And there are already many airlines offering WiFi connectivity to stay connected to the internet even without coverage.
In this sense, an airplane mode that closes all communications is not so useful, and it can be annoying if we have no choice but to activate it. Fortunately, little by little this function is evolving. From Android 11, it is already possible to continue to use Bluetooth with airplane mode activated, so as not to lose the connection with our headphones for example.
And today comes another similar novelty. Google now allows you to turn on WiFi with airplane mode enabled, so we can use airplane connection without having to fully unlock mobile communications. It also gives us a quick way to close the mobile connection while keeping the Internet on WiFi.
According to Google, when we enable airplane mode, WiFi and Bluetooth will be disabled; however, we can modify the configuration so that they remain active, as well as close them at any time.
The bad news is that, for the moment, this novelty seems exclusive to Pixel mobiles, although it arrived as part of an Android 13 update. This is not the first time that Google has given a advantage to its mobiles, and it is something that we are going to see more and more. At the moment it is not known when and how this novelty will reach the rest of Android phones.
