WhatsApp groups have become the first place many Spaniards go when they pick up their mobile phone; they are virtual places where you can meet up with family, friends or simply with other people with the same interests or needs.

So it’s no surprise that with the popularity of groups comes a steady improvement in this feature. The main problem with groups is that they are too exclusive, since they were originally intended only for the closest users (like family members).
The largest WhatsApp groups
For this reason, for years the size limit for WhatsApp groups has been 256 users. This makes sense, because at first you were unlikely to need to add more people; but as demand grew, so did the groups.
Currently, the user limit for WhatsApp groups is 512 people, but that is about to change. The company is working to double the number of users in groups again, which means that these will become gigantic.
WhatsApp groups will be up to 1,024 people
More specifically, and as they discovered in WABetaInfo, the new user limit in WhatsApp groups will be 1024 people. Indeed, more than a thousand people at the same time in the same group, something that has the potential to be very chaotic but was also very desired. It is possible that it will also be a way to improve WhatsApp communities, the new function similar to Discord groups and which will allow groups to be organized into communities of similar subjects.
At the moment, only certain WhatsApp beta users can create such large groups, so we’ll have to wait a bit longer for them to reach the world. At least the novelty will be available for both the Android app and the iOS app, so no one will be left behind.
At the moment, it’s only possible to add 1024 people to a group when creating a new group, so it’s unclear if it will be possible to expand existing groups. For the moment, the company has not given more details.
