If there was anything that was clear to us at last week’s Google I/O 2024, it was that artificial intelligence is becoming more and more important throughout the Google ecosystem. And we don’t say this only for Gemini, but for its application in the most popular services of the Mountain View company.
We have already seen some very interesting AI features which will reach Gmail, others which will improve the search engine and still others which will reduce telephone spam. Below we review those that, sooner or later, will forever change the way we use the ultimate navigation and maps application: Google Maps.
Google Maps gets smarter
Google Maps started updating (first in the United States, as always) to receive artificial intelligence functions that will practically allow you to interact with the navigation and maps service as if it were ChatGPT.
Among them, five deserve to be highlighted. Some are not yet available in many countries (like Europe), but when they are, they will change the app forever:
- Search with Generative AI– With this new feature, you will be able to chat directly with Google Maps to consult any information, such as “places with an old atmosphere in San Francisco”. The AI will use data from Google Maps, including business details, photos, ratings and reviews, to provide you with reliable results.
- AI Suggestions– This new feature, linked to the first, will offer you AI-based suggestions during your trip. For example, if it starts to rain, you can ask in Maps for “rainy day activities” and receive suggestions such as nearby shows or cinemas.
- Augmented reality– Simply tap the camera icon to search for something using Google Lens and you can easily find ATMs, restaurants, parking lots or train stations, displaying their opening hours and locations notes. And the AR (Live View) arrows will guide you to your destination.
- Immersive view– If you’re visiting a location, you can pre-explore it with Immersive View to see photorealistic views and get useful information, such as the weather forecast or busiest times. It is even possible to access interior views of restaurants to, for example, choose a table.
- Multiple search: You can combine words and images to discover what you’re looking for in a different way and access information for millions of local businesses on Google Maps.
