Although the supposed protagonists of the next Google event should be the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, expectations are high (perhaps too many) for the first watch in the Pixel line.

This will be the first time Google has taken a serious look at wearables, and it will do so with everything it has gained and learned from buying Fitbit. The desire among enthusiasts is for it to become the new benchmark for Wear OS watches, something that enhances the platform in the same way Pixel phones did.

Unboxing the Pixel Watch

However, the first “unboxing” of the Pixel Watch reveals details that have been hidden by Google until now, and which may make this watch less appealing than it first appears.

The photos come from Reddit, where a user managed to get a box of the new Pixel Watch before it went on sale. This is the first time we see the device in a different light, and above all from a more unbiased point of view.

For starters, the good news: the Pixel Watch is thinner than the user expected, and in the real photos, you can see that; the upper part of the watch is a black dome and the lower part is metallic, with a crown in the center which will be the main means of control apart from the touch screen.

The watch looks just as sleek in actual photos as it does in the marketing photos we saw with the default strap; we can also buy alternative straps, and in droid life had access to some of the “Active” range for athletes. Straps can be swapped with a process of pressing a button before sliding the strap off the watch. These sport bands “feel high quality,” though that’s hardly surprising considering they’ll retail for $49.

Coming back to the watch, and the part that will generate the most controversy, these real photos confirm the biggest fear we had about the Pixel Watch: the edges of the screen seem very thick. Despite what it may seem, the screen doesn’t actually reach the edges of the sphere, which is more easily seen against the light. You can see the inner circle of the AMOLED screen, surrounded by black frames.

With a dark theme, this probably won’t be an issue, but the outlines will definitely be noticed when the watch displays content or messages. It remains to be seen how it compares to the competition, especially the Galaxy Watch 5, which will be cheaper, and the Apple Watch, which is significantly more expensive but is the main competitor in the sector.
