Emojis have completely changed the way we communicate. Apps like WhatsApp wouldn’t be the same without emojis, because they allow us to express ourselves in more complex ways than a simple sentence; With a simple emoji, it is possible to indicate our mood, our support, or even our laughter.
What if we could have the same thing over the phone? If we don’t know how to express ourselves when speaking, we may have difficulty making others understand what we mean. And there’s nothing worse than a telephone misunderstanding.
Google may have the solution, even if it seems a little ridiculous: sound effects on calls. The new feature was discovered by LeSpAndroid in the pre-installed Phone app on smartphones, and it’s as strange as it sounds, literally speaking.
Emojis on calls
The Phone app now contains six hidden audio files, which can only be accessed directly from code; At the moment users cannot use them, but the idea is that in the future the application will be updated to display a button that will allow us to play the sound directly in the audio of the call .
The six sounds discovered so far are:
- Sadness
- Applause
- Merry Killer
- Risa
- Drum roll
- Gambling
In other words, Google would suggest that while we are talking to another person, we press a button to play a sound that represents how we feel
In addition to playing the sound, the screen would display an associated animation; For example, the sound of the drum roll would show the animation of a drum set and fake dentures to enhance the comedic effect.
It is not yet clear how this feature will work, nor if it will be available directly on the screen when we make a call, and What will Google do to stop us from accidentally turning on sounds?; or it could become a serious problem, if we press the button during a work call, for example.
At the moment, Google has not officially announced this feature, so it is possible that it is preparing a bigger change in the app where these sounds make more sense. For example, it could arrive with Android 15, or in a future major Google apps update.
