With the arrival of Android 12 there has been a great evolutionary leap in terms of design for Google’s operating system, the most used on mobile phones on the planet. With the new version ‘Material You’ landed, the evolution of ‘Material Design’ which has accompanied the system for many versionsand it was put to the device of different manufacturers.
As the models in circulation have been updated and others which have already integrated it have been launched, “Material You” appeared shortly. Present in manufacturers like OPPO or Realme, in others with pure Android but absent in brands as popular as Xiaomi. The reason? Theoretically, the difficulty of accessing said personalization system, but now Google wants to change things with Android 13.
Android 13 will reduce the requirements to implement “Material You”
With Android 13 already in its third beta, and heading towards a likely final release in August, we’re gradually seeing changes that anticipate what’s to come. The next thing, at least of great relevance, will concern the personalization of phones. Or rather, with what many other phones will have easier access to current customization.
Currently, with Android 12 and Android 12L, it is certainly complex to set up the ‘Material You’ theme customization system. The reason is that Google will certify model by model so that it is compatible with libraries integrated with Google Mobile Services and the theme can be implemented on different phones.
However, it seems that everything will change and that Google will eliminate this requirement for the release of Android 13, a requirement that is also removed from Android 12’s GMS distributed by the market. According to sources close to Android Police, removing this model-by-model certification will allow more brands to implement “Material You” seamlessly on their phones, so more models are expected to join the new Android 12 aesthetic and Android 13.
So Google currently only asks to meet a few requirements to be able to access the “Material You” libraries on Android 12 phones, which will also apply to Android 13 when the system is finally released. According to Google itself, as reported on the ‘Material You’ GitHub, it seems that it is already possible to create automated tests to verify that ‘Material You’ is working correctly. Of course, these compatibility and proper functioning tests will only be available for Android 13.
“In Android 12, there is no automated test to validate whether vendors provide colors that meet the visibility, readability, and accessibility requirements. To enable vendors to participate in Material You from day one, we work with vendors individually to implement and verify Material You, then we will enable Material You for them using a whitelist.Vendors can contact Android Partner Engineering to initiate this process. This ensures that vendors don’t accidentally create colors that affect readability, and that developers and users can expect a consistent experience with Material You.In Android 13, automated color scheme testing will enable an approach different.
