There is no perfect device, just like there is no perfect operating system. It all depends on what we want to do and what our needs are, and it is important to leave behind foolish fanaticism and buy the product that really suits them. Whether it’s a Windows laptop or an Android tablet, there are plenty of alternatives on the market.
Of course, none of these products can completely adapt to our needs; We may have to compromise and do things differently, or simply use two devices instead of one. What if it wasn’t necessary?
Lenovo answered that question with one of the most interesting products coming out of CES 2024 this week: the Lenovo ThinkBook Plus Gen 5 Hybrid
If the story ended there, it would be a good laptop, on par with models from other manufacturers; but it doesn’t stop there, far from it. Because it turns out that the aforementioned screen can be separated from the laptop, and at that point it turns into a full Android tablet. We’ve seen many laptops like this before, like Microsoft’s Surface, which are actually Windows tablets that can be connected to a keyboard; but it’s completely different, they are two independent devices in one, each with its own processor and operating system.
In fact, when we separate the screen and it becomes a tablet with Android 13, we do not use the Intel processor, which remains with the keyboard of the laptop, but a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 with 12 GB of memory. RAM and 256 GB of internal storage. And yes, this means that both systems work autonomously and it is possible, for example, to connect the bottom of the laptop to an external monitor and use the laptop part and the tablet part at the same time
Another interesting “trick” that this system allows is the hybrid mode, in which Android apps may appear on Windows 11 screen in a floating window, allowing us to use both systems at the same time depending on our needs. If there is an Android app that we like but it’s not for Windows, this can be a great solution and better than emulation.
As expected, the biggest drawback of the Lenovo ThinkBook Plus Gen 5 Hybrid will be in the price, since we are buying two devices instead of one; The company has confirmed a starting price of $1,999, which will be higher depending on the configuration and has not yet been confirmed for Europe. The launch will take place in the second quarter of 2024.
