Losing or having your cell phone stolen is always a nuisance. If it’s an iPhone, we’re lucky there’s a way to prevent a possible thief from getting their hands on the data we store on the iPhone. In fact, one of the first recommendations if your iPhone is stolen is to influence this by blocking the IMEI.
This term is an acronym for International Mobile Equipment Identity, which is a unique identification code for each cell phone. In the case of the iPhone, it can be blocked quickly from an Apple application, although we will also explain how to know the IMEI.
How to find out the IMEI of an iPhone
There are many ways to find out the IMEI of an iPhone, including looking at it in “Settings” or getting it via a code in the “Phone” app. However, if you don’t have the iPhone in hand you have these other options:
- Through the Internet by entering appleid.apple.com, logging in with your Apple account, going to the “Devices” section and selecting the iPhone in question.
- In the original iPhone boxif you still have it, you will be able to see how the serial number appears at the bottom where the barcodes are.
How to lock an iPhone if it’s lost or stolen
As we said before, if your iPhone has been stolen, there is no problem blocking it even if you don’t know the IMEI and you no longer have an Apple device
- From another Apple device in which you are logged in with your Apple account, you can open the ‘Search’ application, go to the ‘Devices’ tab, select the lost or stolen iPhone, open all the information and in ‘Mark as lost’ press the ”Activate” option.
- From the web browser By accessing the icloud.com site, logging in with your account, you must then locate the native Apple applications there and select “Search”. Then, in the list of devices, you need to select the lost/stolen iPhone and click “Mark as lost”.
Likewise, also it is advisable to block the SIM card. Telcel and Movistar, AT&T and other national operators have this possibility, so it is recommended to contact them, either by calling from other numbers or by going to an establishment. If you are outside of Mexico, you can also do this through the app.
