Google has introduced a new way to activate and deactivate connected devices with its assistant: now it is possible to program them. This way we can deactivate them or activate them by themselves after as long as we want: Google Assistant takes care of everything.
Demotics have undergone a strong push thanks to virtual assistants as they facilitate the control of a large number of devices. The loudspeaker, the TV, we can control a light from a smart screen, from the computer and, of course, also from the mobile. And with programming, this Google Assistant now only offers this possibility with voice.
Program activated or deactivated by voice
Applications that control connected objects tend to be automated: a light can therefore be turned off after a specified time or turn on an outlet before you go home, for example. And this is precisely the function of Google Assistant: from now on, no more need for an application since the assistant itself is in charge of controlling the timers.
The new function is already active in Google’s virtual assistant. It is valid for lights, for smart speakers and other smart devices, such as washing machines. For the moment, it is not compatible with the socketsThere is, however, a little trick: just define the sockets connected to Assistant as lights. This way they can be programmed with voice.
To activate the timers through the Google Assistant, you need to do the following:
- Open the Google Assistant on your mobile (with “Ok, Google, from the home button or with your application).
- Tell the assistant ‘Turn on the lights in three minutes“. You can choose the object that you have connected to Assistant and the desired time. Not all are currently supported.
- Google will send a command to the connected object once the time has elapsed. This way, you won’t have to worry about turning it off manually.
- The marked time appears as a small bubble in the Google Home app, on the device that has been programmed.
- In addition to turning off a device, you can also turn it on, although we only managed to do this with the lights (or with the outlets configured as lights). Given ‘Turn on the dining room light in three minutes‘and the Google Assistant will perform the action after the specified time.
With the new timing, you avoid acquiring connected objects that allow programming since Google Assistant can take care of this task. According to our tests, the new actions work as expected: you can schedule music playback on smart speaker to turn off, set a timer when the washing machine is off, or program the TV to turn off, for example. And all this with the voice.
