Sending files that take up a lot of space is already a task that requires the use of additional services on our computer, let alone from our iPhone. And yes, there are cases in which our iPhone may contain files that exceed 5 GB of space. The most common example is a video we recorded at maximum quality, without compression, from an iPhone 14 Pro.
Faced with sizes like this, not even WeTransfer can help us unless we are willing to pay. fortunately we have a free way to send these files for free and without leaving the iPhone
The only limit is set by you… or your width
The magic is done by a service called Smash, which helps us to be able to send files without size limits, even in free mode. You can download its official app from the app store. There are payment plans that prioritize the download and keep it available longer, but we won’t need them if we accept the free signup terms:
- If the file is larger than 2 GB, the download may have lower priority for the service and may take longer to reach the destination.
- The download is kept on the servers for seven days.
- The service interface adds advertising.
After downloading the app and opening it, you will see that you only need to tap in the center of the screen to be able to send files. You’ll have the option to select photos and videos from your camera roll or a file you’ve saved via the Files app, including those from iCloud Drive (but not shared via this service):
Once you have selected these files, they will be uploaded and a link to share them will be generated automatically. In my test I used something small, but keep in mind that if you want to download multiple GB you have to be patient and use a quality Wi-Fi network
Once the download is complete, you will see that you can immediately share the downloaded file via the iOS “Share” interface:
Anyone you send this link to will be able to download the file from any device they choose. You won’t need any appwhat will open is a website with the file and a countdown of days left to download it:
The main advantage of Smash is that it is simple and straightforward, and for one-time mailings it doesn’t even ask you to register with a user account. In case of sending high quality videos or large files, it can save you trouble, and of course, you can also use it from iPad or Mac.
