We live in a completely interconnected world and the days when just by moving around disconnected us from the Internet are long gone. But there are still certain times when it is still useful to “isolate” the iPhone from all communication. And no, I’m not talking about iOS isolation mode.
This is why Airplane Mode exists, both on iPhone and any other mobile device. We will see What is this airplane mode for and how to activate it using iOS 17. There are several ways to do this, but they are all very simple.
What is airplane mode for?
Airplane mode is a special mode in which the iPhone must isolate itself from all communication, which is necessary in most flights to avoid interference that could cause problems for the pilot. While Airplane Mode is On no data of any kind is received, no text messages, no phone calls. This remains necessary, even if there is an open debate on this subject within the European Union.
Additionally, that same airplane mode can be useful for times when you want to be completely unplugged to relax or are looking to save battery power for times when you need it. By not having to send or receive data, the iPhone turns off the components needed for this and doesn’t use as much power.
How to activate airplane mode
There are several ways to activate it, but the main one will always be through the iPhone’s Control Center. You just need to open it by swiping down from the upper right corner of the iPhone screen and locate the button with the airplane icon:
Alternatively, you can also enable Airplane mode from the Settings app:
Another way to enable airplane mode is do it from Apple Watchpressing its button on the right side to press the same button as before in the watchOS 10 Control Center:
Airplane mode will also be enabled on the iPhone, unless we have changed the default settings so that it is not.
How to Use WiFi and Blue tooth in Airplane Mode
Some airlines allow you to use WiFi and Bluetooth communications. So iPhone airplane mode allows us to activate these two connections independently and keeping phone calls and mobile data turned off.
You can do this from the same control center by activating airplane mode then pressing the WiFi and Bluetooth buttons so that all three options are active:
So even if you can’t call or text, you can use your AirPods and have access to the plane’s WiFi network if the airline offers it. It can also be a good way to isolate yourself from calls if you just need to disconnect for a moment to relax.
