In June 2021, Apple again took advantage of the Worldwide Developers Conference to announce the arrival of a new update to the iPhone operating system: iOS 15.
Three months later, it became officially available (since September 20). You no longer have to settle for old versions and you can enjoy all its new features and important fixes in its security system.
In this article, we explain everything you need to consider before updating your device, as well as, of course, the steps to follow to install the latest iOS. We also walk you through what to do if you’re using a beta version.
We are already on iOS 15.5.
What to do before updating iOS on your iPhone
Step 1. Create iCloud or iTunes Backup
The first thing to do before installing a new version of the operating system is to create a backup of your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. For this, you can use both iCloud and iTunes.
1. Make sure you have access to iCloud or iTunes, and an additional computer and device that you can use later to access the backup.
2. If you choose to create a backup using iCloud, you will first need to enable the option by going to ‘Settings‘ and tapping on your photo at the top. Now press ‘iCloud‘. On the new screen, scroll down and tap ‘Copy to iCloud‘.
Then activate the light switch on the right side, keeping in mind that this will stop saving a backup to your computer when you sync with iTunes. Then you can create the copy as long as you have space in your iCloud.
3. Alternatively, you can use iTunes to create a backup of your device. You will need to connect it to a PC or Mac using a USB cable and install the program on your computer.
When you plug your iPhone or iPad into your PC or Mac, iTunes opens automatically. Now press it moving icon under the toolbar to access your device preferences.
Then choose where you want the backup to be saved – in iCloud or on your computer – and click the ‘Back up now‘.
Step 2. Keep a copy of the older version of iOS
While this second step can be safely skipped, we recommend keeping it in mind, as it will likely make it easier for you if you regret installing the latest version of the iOS operating system.
This is to create a copy of the version you currently have before updating your device, which you can access later. However, keep in mind that sometimes this is not possible. You can download it again from iTunes.
Step 3. Free up space for the new iOS download
It’s a good idea to free up a few gigabytes on your iPhone or iPad to make room for the new version of iOS, simply because sometimes your device will need it to update.
In our article on how to free up space on iphone you will find all our recommendations, but above all we suggest remove some appswhich you can reinstall once the update is complete.
Step 4. Plug your device in to a power outlet
There’s nothing worse than running out of battery in the middle of an update. That’s why we strongly recommend keeping the device to be updated plugged in during the whole process, especially if it’s at 50% or less.
You can use the official cables sold by Apple on its website – you may be interested USB cable It is AC adapteror opt for the cheaper versions you will find in Amazon.
Step 5. Connect your device to a Wi-Fi network
Finally, remember to keep your device connected to a trusted Wi-Fi network throughout the update, especially if you don’t have a good 3G or 4G connection. This too will prevent you from running out of mobile data.
