After two years of rumors, leaks and announcements, the Xiaomi car has finally been officially presented. A presentation that could well be the most important in the company’s history, now that it looks to its future beyond the mobile device sector; a path that started off on the right foot, considering that the presentation had a audience estimated at 46 million people between the Chinese social network Weibo and Western broadcasts.
Expectations were huge, so it’s surprising that Xiaomi managed to meet them. The Xiaomi SU7 presents very surprising technical characteristics, which rival and even surpass the best alternatives in the sector. For example, Xiaomi boasted of a brutal acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.78 seconds and a top speed of 265 km/h, in both cases beating the Porsche Taycan Turbo, one of the most advanced, luxurious and expensive electric cars today.
And Porsche wasn’t the only one to end badly: even Tesla received its share. The SU7 has a resistance coefficient (Cd) of only 0.195
Perhaps Xiaomi’s advantage lies in the integration with its mobile platform. We already knew that the huge 16.1-inch screen inside is based on the new HyperOS system based on Android; This allows it to offer an interface very similar to that of Android Auto and one of the most complete application platforms (ignoring Google Play for the moment). Of course, this means that integration with other Xiaomi products will be complete, allowing you to control home devices such as lights or smart devices before you get home. It will also be comp atible with Xiaomi tablets, which can be installed in the rear seats to provide access to multimedia content such as series and films during the trip.
An important detail that we now know is that the system is based on Qualcomm’s SA8295 platform, and according to the company that will allow us to obtain an experience as smooth as that of a Xiaomi mobile. And for the driving assistance system, the SU7 has two Nvidia Drive Orin processors which will process data from different sensors, including a laser on the roof of the car to access partially autonomous functions.
Xiaomi’s strategy with the SU7 consists of repeating the approach already undertaken with its smartphones: offering the best at a very good price. Remember that Xiaomi has arrived in an Android smartphone market dominated by Samsung and HTC; and since then it has surpassed one and the other has practically disappeared. It achieved this by offering mobile phones equipped with cutting-edge and varied hardware, but with prices adapted to the situation of users.
Xiaomi will also use the same strategy used to introduce different types of products under its brand. In China, “Xiaomi” is more than just a brand and has become a lifestyle, and it is perfectly possible to live only on products manufactured by the company; and now it is also possible to go to work or go on vacation with your car. To reinforce this idea, Xiaomi will launch limited editions of the new Xiaomi 14 with colors created for the car, which are aimed at enthusiasts of the brand.
Xiaomi should follow the same strategy with its electric cars; It is not in vain that it will initially offer two very different versions, with the SU7 Max breaking records and the basic SU7 with a more accessible price which could start at 190,000 yuan (24,400 dollars) depending on the leaks. Reservations have already started in China, and production is expected to begin in February.
