After crossing the United States, Skyshowtime arrived in Europe. And it happened at the right time. Some platforms had already increased their prices, others were due to increase and, what’s more, they landed in our country just when Netflix announced the change in policy on shared accounts.
Additionally, it hit a knockdown price with a brutal introductory offer, but not everything has been positive on the platform. Afterwards, I will give you my opinion on SkyShowtime after almost a year as a user of the platform because it has positive points and some negative points which end up weighing too much.
The positive points
Let’s start by looking at the points that, for me, are the strongest in SkyShowtime. Although there may be more to one side than the other, in my opinion I will highlight both the three positives and the three negatives.
Good wardrobe background
The first is something that really attracted me when the platform was announced: the catalog. The truth is that I didn’t have many series that I wanted to watch, but I had ‘Halo’, ‘Frasier’, ‘Californication’, ‘The Office’, ‘Parks and Recreation’ or ‘Yellowstone’, among others. others. , which I wanted to rewatch, see or appreciate for the first time.
With these sets alone, plus the asking price, I had a good enough excuse to try it. Furthermore, behind SkyShowtime are Paramount NBC, DreamWorks, Universal or Peacockvery powerful producers in the sector.
I had already seen ‘The Office’, but it’s one of the series that I can watch at any time and, wh at’s more, it started with many legendary saga films that are always a pleasure to watch again. This wardrobe, as I call it, won me over.
And it has a lot of cartoons, something that the little ones in the house (or the house you share the account with) enjoy.
Own quality content
With the production companies behind it, there is no doubt that the platform’s catalog will be of quality. They have a very, long catalog of series and, above all and in my opinion, films.
Little by little they filled it and some 2023 films are now available as interesting as ‘Mission Impossible: Mortal Sentence’, ‘Transformers Awakening of the Beasts’ (regular, but if you liked ‘Beats Primal’ it’s mandatory) or ‘Asteroid City’.
In series, the second season of ‘Halo’ has just arrived, there is the big ‘Poker Face’ and the “second part” of Frasier, in addition to the exclusive series on the platform, so there is a lot of good content (and just as bad, even if it’s normal on all platforms).
A ridiculous price and shared accounts
It’s clear that it was the price that appealed to many of us at first. The offer of 50% for life (if you do not cancel) was extremely juicy, since it left the monthly payment at 2.99 dollars. This is a really good deal for this wardrobe and new items..
And, currently, it doesn’t seem that high to me. It is true that the monthly payment costs 5.99 dollars and is high for the state of the platform, which I will now comment on, but the annual or semi-annual subscription leaves the monthly payment at 3.92 dollars.
It’s a very attractive price and, what’s more, you can share the account. You have the ability to create five profiles, enter a PIN, create child profiles and there are no restrictions like with Netflix or what Disney+ offers.
And the negative points
Now though, SkyShowtime also has negative points or that I didn’t like them that much. Some of them were half-resolved, but the truth is that the cheap price didn’t justify (and I don’t think it justifies) certain decisions.
News rhythm
The first is that the initial pace of news was gradual.. Little by little the platform receives more content, but gets used to the news feed of Netflix, Disney+ or Movistar (yes, half of them don’t interest you, but at least you have a lot of new stuff to choose from ) , the slowness of SkyShowtime is something I didn’t like at first.
I once watched “Halo”, “Yellowstone” and the new “Star Trek”, I kept thinking “what now”. In fact, I admit that for about six months I only maintained the platform… because it was cheap.
Now the batteries are starting and we have interesting new releases in terms of series and films, although I still consider that there is little new content if we take into account the number and power of studios and companies production people who are behind the platform.
Controversies with the disappearance of content
From night to morning, SkyShowtime removed movies (entire sagas like “Fast and Furious”) and certain episodes of series like “Dexter”, but the most worrying are series like “Penny Dreadful”, “Mr Robot”, “Downton Abbey”, “Yellowstone”, “House”, “Parks and Recreation” or “The Office”, among others, published a missing person notice the following month.
This would leave the content catalog very limited and, above all, uncertainty about what would happen to the series for which, precisely, you had subscribed to the platform. We contacted SkyShowtime and they assured us it was a mistake, but when the date came around, while most of the content didn’t disappear, other productions did.
They left me in the middle of “Parks and Recreation” (Thank goodness it’s on HBO Max) and sagas like “Fast and Furious” still haven’t appeared. However, after a few weeks these returned to the catalog and a case like this has not been repeated, but the truth is that this has been an important negative point for subscribers in the first weeks of life of the platform in our country.
No improvement in audiovisual quality (and it’s not because of 1080p)
And where they haven’t improved is in the quality of video and audio. Using the outdated H.264 or AVC codec, the maximum resolution is 1080p, but the bitrate is not the most suitable and, moreover, it does not have 5.1 audio solutions.
In content with many dark areas, you may see artifacts in the image, something that is not noticed in others like Prime Video, Netflix or Disney+, and also the weight of downloads is high if we take into account the quality of the image.
On mobile the truth is that you won’t notice it because the pixel density and screen size work in favor of the content, but when you go in front of a 55 or 65 inch TV… it is noticeable.
There is something that has nothing to do with the platform: time
Finally, After almost a year, my opinion on SkyShowtime is positive. It’s true that there are negative points that weigh or have weighed at certain times during this period with the platform, but if I keep it it’s for a reason. Precisely because of this wardrobe and other exclusive serial productions.
Now, as a final thought, I have to say that I wouldn’t be surprised if SkyShowtime was, along with Netflix, the first platform to drop if prices continue to rise on another. And we don’t have time to see everything, and that’s the big enemy of this type of platform.
In my case, a lot of Prime Video and Disney+, although I choose HBO, SkyShowtime and Netflix. But there is also Filmin with an excellent catalog and video streaming platforms aren’t the only ones competingbut there are also streaming game services like Xbox Game Pass that want to take over video platforms.
Time is not unlimited and not only are there many platforms, but most are increasing their prices. It’s a fierce, unforgiving competition and the days continue to have the hours they do. And when it does, and With so many powerhouse production companies like SkyShowtime, we have to offer a little more. in quality form to choose to watch the film on it (since some are on other platforms with better quality) or in catalog form.
