Since its official arrival in Europe at the end of February, I have been able to fully test SkyShowtime. Take advantage of the introductory offer which not only keeps the price at 2.99 dollars even now that it costs more, but also guarantees that you will always pay half. However, no lower price now, no lifetime discount. Goodbye SkyShowtime.
I speak of course from my personal experience, respecting everyone’s tastes and preferences. I’m also not leaving out what I loved about SkyShowtime, but ultimately I realized it wasn’t for me. At least for now.
The low price and the “just one more subscription” trap
If we look at the price comparison of the main streaming platforms, we see that SkyShowtime’s 2.99 dollars make it the cheapest platform. Even without initial promotion, it is much cheaper than almost allhaving only FlixOlé and Prime Video under 5.49 of this platform.
However, we are in the era of subscriptions. They are everywhere; from streaming platforms like these to apps of all kinds. And beware, these are not always bad choices and I appreciate a lot that I see well rewarded.
However, I also admit that I have subscribed many times to services that I thought would make money, taking advantage of the fact that they were cheap and that after all it was just another subscription. He wasn’t going to notice how low the price was. The 3 dollars SkyShowtime cost me didn’t make me poor, just like I’m not rich now so I don’t spend it. However, with other subscriptions it becomes an important mountain.
So, starting from the fact that in the end it’s still something that costs me money every month, I wanted to see if it was profitable for me. If he really used it. I didn’t need a giant blackboard and lots of calculators because I myself knew that I had barely used it for over a week. Why so little? I explain it.
SkyShowtime must have its own bombshell
Once I saw what I was most interested in, there was almost nothing SkyShowtime had to offer me. Mind you, I’m not saying it doesn’t have enough content for someone to refund it. However, the vast majority of their catalog deviates from my content preferencesexcept for a few anime series which I only skimmed over for the nostalgia one.

Image: SkyShowtime’s ‘Yellowstone’
‘Yellowstone’ is surely the platform’s greatest asset and, even without being to my liking (I couldn’t watch the second episode), I admit that it’s a good achievement. In fact, I know from friends that it’s a very good series. However, it is not a fame bomb like other platforms have.
And here is perhaps the key by which I have the intuition that, not only for me, but for SkyShowtime, it will be difficult to find subscribers: they barely have weeklies premieres and what they have is not that they are titles called to attract subscribers. The most recent thing is to have saved ‘Por H o por B’, a Spanish comedy that HBO Max produced in its time following the short film ‘Pipas’ and that, although I confess it’s funny, it’s not the happy that pushes me to stay.
There are more things that shock me when I see your catalog

Then I come across a controversial topic where there are and they are the “withdrawals” of series from its catalog. Without notice, this week a callsign started appearing in some series stating that they will be gone in 28 days (now less, of course). My colleague Alejandro Alcolea contacted the platform and they told him that it was due to an error. I have no reason to doubt SkyShowtime’s word, but the fact that a few days later everything remains the same and the countdown continues to tick on makes me think hard.
Moreover, during these months when I left SkyShowtime aside, I remained hooked to the series of other platforms. “Silo” on Apple TV+, which is still on the air, is one of my favorites. But also some films brought by Movistar Plus+ and Netflix.
I still hope SkyShowtime can tell me about it again in the future, if only to watch some specific content and go again. And despite the fact that the one for 2.99 dollars is never going to have it. However, another reason that made me want to disengage is that I don’t know how long I’ll have to wait to get addicted to something from SkyShowtime. And continue to pay in the meantime, I frankly saw that absurd.
Furthermore, and even if this was not a reason for withdrawal, I acknowledge that 1080p is a bit short. My aforementioned colleague Alejandro explained something similar to my experience, albeit applying it to his case. This highlighted something I completely agree with: 4K is needed. I understand this will be a premeditated cut to justify the price drop, but if you really want to stand up to the big guys, you have to bank on it.
And it’s that another thing that shocks me is that behind SkyShowtime, there are no newbies, but some of the biggest in the industry. It’s not just Sky Studios and Showtime that give it its name, but also DreamWorks Animation, Paramount Pictures, Peacock and Universal Pictures. With such a force behind me, that the catalog is so limited, it overwhelms me. And even more so when the platform arrived a year after the United States, and perhaps gained time to, at least, announce future renowned productions.
An alliance with operators could also be beneficial

Although I am currently happy with my mobile carrier and my home fiber provider, which is not a single company, I would not rule out unifying my services into one. To this respect Operators such as Movistar, Vodafone and Orange usually offer televisioneither his own or platforms like Disney+.
In the case of streaming platforms, they usually give them away for a few months and then offer a discount when contracted with fiber and mobile pack. All in all, it saves a lot of money, so seeing SkyShowtime added to carrier choices might be just the thing to put it back on the platform.
SO, Exactly three months after SkyShowtime arrived, sorry to say it’s not for me. I’ll be back? Assurance. Like I said before, incorporating something that catches my eye into your catalog will keep me coming back without thinking, even if it’s on an ad hoc basis. The when I have it already more blurred. And SkyShowtime doesn’t give me much hope that this wait will be short.
