After testing a few GPS navigators compatible with Android Auto, it is clear to me that Waze is the one I like the most while driving: It is free, its interface is colorful, intuitive and relaxed, it has an active community behind it to notify you almost immediately of any incident on the road that occurs, it has many customization options. Of course, depending on your taste, the colors: I would probably recommend a simpler one to my father.
Waze is my favorite Android Auto navigator, but it is not perfect: it lacks certain things that Google Maps has and if we talk about speed cameras, for long journeys which are the first time I do, I admit that I prefer to have a specific application with a complete database covering all types of radars
One of the problems with radar apps is that they have a much weaker navigation interface than any browser, let alone one with as polished a design as Waze. But that’s not a problem: I have a trick to have the best of both worlds, that is to say all the speed cameras in your database and also the Waze experience.
I want the best in Waze apps and speed cameras, and there’s a way to get it
There are a few radar apps for Android Auto and I was able to try most of them, but given that I normally always do the same trips and don’t use the car much either, it’s clear for me that it’s not worth going through the checkout, so what I use are fixed and mobile speed cameras and the free version includes ads, but they are not particularly intensive or annoying, so it’s worth it In my opinion.
However, this trick works with other radar apps as well as other navigation apps, so even though in my case I use the combination of “Fixed and Mobile Speed Cameras” and Waze, it is something ‘as simple as make it open in the background.
The key is that Android Auto Coolwalk supports up to three different windows open on the foreground screena larger one for navigation applications (which covers browsers but also radar detectors), another for multimedia and messaging, so you will never see the browser and radar detector in the foreground, but it does not is not a problem as long as the one working below remains active and properly configured to give warnings.
I quit the radar application opened and configured with sound
What happens when a speed camera appears nearby? Most likely Waze will display it on the screen and that’s it, but if for some reason it resists the browser but the radar warning detector has registered it, then its alert will sound and I will be notified . Additionally, tapping the recently opened apps icon in the bottom menu will bring the radar app to the foreground so you can see the radar type and position in more detail.
