Instagram announces new age verification measures
Instagram wants to start tackling the worrying situation of accounts used by children. So far, the social network has not paid attention to this detail which worries parents and lawmakers in the United States.
It’s no secret that today children can access many social networks and their content, which for adults and parents is considered explicit and not suitable for such minors.
9to5mac shared a study of 2,000 children in the United States by Thorn last year, a child protection organization. The results showed that 40% of children under 13 used Instagram and other social networks that claim to exclude them.
The most disturbing thing about this is that the majority have confirmed being exposed to uncomfortable situations due to sexually abusive messages. Instagram and Snapchat are the networks most cited by children who admitted to receiving messages where they were sent or asked for photos for the purpose of sexual interaction.
New age verification measures on Instagram
Months after facing controversy due to Thorn’s study, Instagram today announced https://about.instagram.com/blog/announcements/new-ways-to-verify-age -on-instagram new age verification measures you are testing
“Starting today, we’re testing new options for people on Instagram to verify their age, starting with people based in the United States. If someone tries to change their date of birth on Instagram under the age 18 or older, we’ll ask you to verify your age using one of three options: upload your ID, record a selfie video, or ask mutual friends to verify their age. feature to ensure teens and adults have the right experience for your age range. We also partner with Yoti, a company specializing in online age verification, to help ensure people’s privacy .”
How Instagram Verification Methods Work
Instagram explains how its new verification methods will work. For the moment, they will first be applied in the United States.later and depending on their effectiveness, they will be implemented in the rest of the countries.
selfie video: You can choose to upload a video selfie to verify your age. If you choose this option, you will see on-screen instructions to guide you. After taking a video selfie, we share the image with Yoti and nothing else. Yoti’s technology estimates your age based on your facial features and shares this estimate with us. Meta and Yoti delete the image. Technology cannot recognize your identity, only your age.
Act as social guarantor: This option allows you to ask common subscribers to confirm your age. The person vouching must be at least 18 years of age, must not be vouching for anyone else at the time, and must comply with any other guarantees we have in place. The three people you select to answer for you will receive a request to confirm their age and must respond within three days.
However, according to the publication, these new methods will only work for registered users who want to “try to change their date of birth”. That is, be registered as a minor and change the date to become an adult.
Another detail, although the association with Yeti is announced as one of the most important verifications, it is not specified whether your analysis will apply to new records or is an attempt to direct users viewing suspicious activity to “relevant” content.
In general, this is the topic that Instagram covers the most with its advertising, adequate consumption or experience for each user.

But what do you think, Meta is more concerned about maintaining subscribers and users than the presence of minors on its platforms, does it offer a relevant solution with its new checks? It is still too early to tell whether this will convince those affected and interested in this situation, but for now seems to be a consumption plan rather than a security measure. Hopefully it doesn’t and it works.
On top of that, the app had a bug that caused users to see repeated stories and the ability to use a Meta avatar on Instagram was revealed. We’ll see what else is reported the changes that Meta is applying in one of its most popular networks.
