There are many generative artificial intelligence tools that can create text, images and even videos of surprising quality, even if they don’t yet look entirely realistic. The companies responsible for these tools They use databases of human-created content to train AIand this is precisely what Meta will start doing with the photos that we publish on their social networks.
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, is working on its own AI tools, both for images and video creation. And from next June, they will be able to start using user photos to train this AI, but there is a way to avoid it
How to stop Instagram, Facebook, Messenger and Threads from using your images for AI
First, Meta will be able to use images that users post on Instagram, Facebook, Messenger and Threads, but not WhatsApp. This is because the instant messaging platform uses end-to-end encryption to protect the privacy of user chats, so the company does not have access to these images.
In the case of its other platforms, social networks like Instagram and Facebook, Meta will start using user images from June 26.
In this way, Meta joins other companies that practice this practice to train their AIs. Currently the law does not prevent th is, but this could change in 2025 with the European Union law on AI, one of the objectives of which is to ensure that AI systems are safe and respect the rights citizens.
Fortunately, in Europe it is possible to prevent Meta from using your photos and posts to train its AI. The process is very simple, you just need to follow these steps from your Android mobile:
- On Instagram we go to the tab with our profile and press the button in the form of three lines in the upper right corner
- In the menu Settings and activitywe select Information
- Then we continue Privacy Policy
- This will take us to a page with all the information about the Meta platforms privacy policy. Now click on the link in the sentence “Learn more about your right to object
- We scroll down until we find the form, and we fill it out with our data and a description of why we want to object to the use of our images. It can be brief
- Once finished, press “Send”
This way we will tell Meta that we do not want them to use our photos, and this is something we can do from Instagram, Facebook or even from the browser (from this link). If you want to opt out of your posts being used to train Meta’s AI, the sooner you do so, the better.
