iOS 15.4 unlocks ProMotion’s 120Hz benefits for developers

Just days apart, Apple yesterday released the final version of iOS 15.3 and the first developer beta of iOS 15.4. This new update is loaded with new features. Among them, the possibility of unlocking the iPhone 12 and 13 with Face ID even if we wear a mask. Another novelty is the developer version of the iPhone 13 Pro ProMotion feature. This function allows you to work with screen refresh rates up to 120 Hz, which until now was only available for the system interface and Apple applications.

Apple releases ProMotion and its 120Hz refresh rates to developers on iOS 15.4

The arrival of the iPhone 13 Pro brought the long-awaited 120Hz refresh rate to the screens of these devices under the so-called ProMotion feature. iOS 15 brought this feature onboard by tying the iPhone 13 Pro hardware to iOS. However, ProMotion was not available to developers until now.

The new Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion can refresh at various rates between 10 and 120 times per second, depending on what you’re doing. It automatically knows when to deliver maximum graphics performance and when it’s time to save power. It even adjusts its speed to match your finger as you scroll. It’s like touching the future.

According to official Apple sources, this was due to a bug in the basic animation. Core Animation is one of the frameworks or working environments which provides high speeds and smooth animations without overloading the CPU of the devices. In other words, the novelties of ProMotion and its high refresh rates fell on this frame. The existence of this bug prevented developers from being able to integrate this function into their applications.

However, it seems that the bug has been fixed in iOS 15.4 Yes developers are seeing their apps start running at 120Hz. There are doubts about the rest of the operating system because in many places of iOS the refresh rate was limited to 80 Hz. In the coming days, users of an iPhone 13 Pro or Pro Max and the beta version of iOS 15.4 will be able to experience a substantial change in the fluidity of the interface.
