Since the arrival of the notch o notch In 2017, iPhone owners had to make do without knowing at a glance the exact percentage of their phone’s remaining battery.
Because there was less space in the status bar along the top edge of the screen, Apple reduced the information displayed: just the time, cellular and Wi-Fi signal strength, and a graphic icon indicating the amount of energy remaining.
Some even interpreted it as a step forward by Apple to avoid this reliance on constantly looking at the data and seeing how it turned out. Thing is, to see exactly how much battery you had left, you had to swipe down to open the control center.
But of iOS 16 release in September 2022, that changed. Apple gave users the option to put the battery percentage back on their home screens; that’s how it’s done, because it doesn’t come by default.
How to Make Your iPhone Show Battery Percentage
First, and as seems logical, you must have a iPhone compatible with the new version of iOS 16. We also have an article in which we talk about iOS 16 and whether you really should update now or wait.
Once the compatibilities are checked, enabling the battery percentage icon on your iPhone is a piece of cake. Open the “Settings” app, scroll down and tap on the “Battery” option.
Tap the “Battery Percentage” switch and you’ll see the battery icon in the top right of your screen now has a number inside it, referring to the amount of capacity left in your iPhone battery.
How Pre-Notch iPhones Display Battery Percentage
If you happen to have a iPhoneSE or another pre-notched series model, displaying the battery percentage is again slightly different, but considerably easier.
Like iPhones with notches, these models still display the remaining battery charge as an icon at the top right of the home screen, but they also have enough space to display it as a number.
We understand that these devices show the battery percentage by default, but if you can’t see it, go to “Settings > Battery” and press the “Battery percentage” button.
Note that this is not the same as the overlay number that can be seen with the iOS 16 Update: It is located next to the battery icon, like in the good old days. But there are some advantages to having a pre-notch design.
What if the iPhone can’t get the feature?
This seems unlikely except for users who are locked out of the iOS 16 update.
First of all, not all iPhones can install iOS 16. We have already listed iOS 16 compatible iPhones in a previous article, but the main news is that the first generation iPhone 7s, 6s and SE lose this feature.
So you need an iPhone 8 or later. (However, if you have an iPhone SE or other high-end phone, the news is good in other respects.)
And it is that even some of the phones that can install iOS 16 will not get this particular new feature. The battery percentage indicator is not available on iPhone XR, 11, 12 mini and 13 mini models.
We suspect that iPhone minis and those with LCD screens don’t have enough resolution for the small text showing the battery figure to be clear enough for Apple to include.
Ultimately, you need one of the following phones to benefit from the battery percentage feature:
- iPhone 14 Pro Max
- iPhone 14 Pro
- iPhone 14 plus
- iPhone 14
- iPhone 13 Pro Max
- iPhone 13 Pro
- iPhone 13
- iPhone 12 Pro Max
- iPhone 12 Pro
- iPhone 12
- iPhone 11 Pro Max
- iPhone 11 Pro
- iPhone XS Max
- iPhone XS
- iPhone X
It is likely that with the arrival of new iOS 16 updates there will be changes in this regard, so if you stay out of this implementation, keep an eye out for the next steps that Apple can take. .
The company has added the percentage indicator option to iPhone XR, iPhone 11, iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 13 mini. There’s no guarantee it’ll launch with iOS 16.1 in October, but fingers crossed.
How to See Battery Percentage on iPhone Without iOS 16
If your phone loses functionality or you’re not using iOS 16, you can always try other alternatives.
One way to quickly see your exact battery percentage is to swipe down from the right side of the top edge and open Control Center.
Above the various controls and switches on this screen, you’ll see the status bar drop down from the top, and now you’ll have enough room to expand on the battery status in a graph and percentage.
Note that this is specific to notched phones. Other iPhones clear the top status bar in Control Center, but iPhones that don’t have a notch can still show the battery percentage.
There are other methods you can try to accomplish the same thing. Each time you connect the iPhone to a power source, a graph appears showing the current battery percentage.
And the ever-underrated Siri can help here, too: just say something like “What’s my battery percentage?” (or even “What’s my battery?”) and it’ll tell you over voicemail and show you in an on-screen message.
Finally, we can also recommend using a battery widget. Long-press on the home page, then tap the plus sign in the top left. You will see a variety of widgets that can be added to this page.
Find batteries. The medium and large versions of this widget show the exact percentage for your iPhone, as well as other connected devices such as your Apple Watch or AirPods.
