Our mouths are full of talk about the artificial intelligence that will come to the iPhone with iOS 18 and it is not surprising to see that all the leaks indicate that this is the big news. Even the CEO of Apple himself points this way. We don’t know if this is Apple’s own model, Gemini, or a mix. However, we know that not all news will be focused on AI. This is obvious, although it never hurts to remember it.
One of these other developments will be related to interface customization, something by which iOS has never been characterized, but in which it has been growing in recent years. This is information that comes from Mark Gurman, who already predicted a few months ago that iOS 18 would be the biggest update in the history of the iPhone. This information was also supplemented by MacRumors.
Icons and widgets wherever we want?
As we already said in the introduction, iOS has never been characterized as a highly customizable system. Not at least like on Android. Apple has opted more to offer us a simple interface in which to vary the order of the icons and nothing else. Fair enough for some and rare for others, but that’s what it was.
With the years, iOS’s evolution in personalization has been evident. See the introduction of widgets to any of our screens with iOS 14 or the redesign of the lock screen with iOS 16. The next step was very obvious, although until now we had no proof.
First it was Mark Gurman who, in his latest newsletter, suggested that iOS 18 would add greater customization, so a few hours later MacRumors arrived with its own sources to confirm that The main screen of the application can be further customized
It’s not that this is a change that will revolutionize the iPhone, but there is no doubt that it is one more step in this iOS customization that many have been asking for for years. Another idea that is not confirmed, but is still on the table, is that of being able to customize the app library. This also arrived in iOS 14 and so far it organizes itself automatically. There’s no evidence that this will change with iOS 18, but it’s been a user request since its birth, so it could perfectly address the issue of getting greater customization in the next update.
However, as the news is not too specific, we would also expect other additions for the home screen which until now were not integrated in any way. MacRumors talks about what happens on the lock screen and something similar cannot be ruled out, such as the possibility of configuring icons and widgets by playing with the depth effect of the background, etc.
Regardless, the exact answer to the doubts suggested by the leaks will be known in June, when Apple will present this update and the rest of the updates at WWDC 2024. An event that could precisely become official in these weeks, since it is assumed that it will be again in June as always, but its dates have not yet been officially confirmed.
