Not all the new features of iOS 18 will focus on artificial intelligence, there will also be changes in native applications, and one of them that we have been waiting for for a long time: there will be a specific application for our passwordsboth on iPhone, iPad and Mac, even on Apple Vision Pro and Windows.
We’ve been storing our passwords in iCloud Keychain for years. Unknown to many at first, this feature that stores all our passwords, payment methods and other information to access services and websites has been with us since October 2013, more than a decade. Little by little it has acquired new features, such as the recent incorporation of two-factor authentication (2FA) which allows us to increase security when accessing websites and services, or the latest “Passkeys”, which replace our passwords with identification via our face or fingerprints. Little by little it has gained relevance within the system and from iOS 18, according to Mark Gurman, it will finally have its own application, so we will no longer need to go to the system settings to be able to check our passwords.
The app contains the complete list of user logins and divides the details into different categories such as accounts, Wi-Fi networks and passkeys, an Apple-promoted password replacement based on Face ID and Touch ID . Like most password managers, data can be automatically populated on websites and apps when a user logs in. The software will also work on Apple Vision Pro and Windows computers. And it can support verification codes and serve as an authenticator app similar to Google Authenticator.
For years I used iCloud Keychain to store my passwords and sync them across all my devices, and the recent addition of 2FA and passkeys allowed me to ditch Google Authtenticator, but The lack of a specific application is a flaw that has forced me to use, for years now, a password manager like 1Password. Maybe this new app for iOS 18 will let me use the native iOS 18 features exclusively, and save a subscription along the way.
