In his recent power on the newsletter, Mark Gurman de Bloomberg reports that Apple seeks to offer a new capacity with the Apple pencil: the management of a “virtual reed calligraphy pen” which would make the device an Arabic calligraphy tool.
An reed pen is also known as the Kamish pen. The “analog” version, if you want, is generally made from river rosules and has been used for centuries by calligraphs from the Middle East. Apple offers only one point of point in pencil, and Gurman calls it a “virtual” pen, it therefore seems that the Arab calligraphy support will be implemented via software. Gurman does not offer more details, it is therefore not clear if the support of Reed Pen would be for the four Apple Crayer models or if it was limited to the Apple PRO and / or Apple Crayer (USB-C).
As part of a more important thrust to extend its presence in India, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, Apple also plans to offer a “very advanced bidirectional keyboard” which can switch between Arabic and English for iOS and iPados. Gurman does not indicate when the pen and the keyboard will be available, although they are probably part of the new iPados 19 announcements to WWDC25 on June 9.
