If the latest rumor from Chinese site IT Home is to be believed, it will take significantly less time to charge your iPhone 16 Pro or Pro Max. This year’s Apple Pro models are expected to get a significant boost in maximum charging speed: up to 40W (up from 27W) using a USB-C connection and 20W (up from 15W) using a MagSafe-certified wireless charger.
This is a 50% improvement in maximum wired charging speed and 33% improvement in wireless charging speed (when using a MagSafe charger).
The idea is that the increased speed is supposed to compensate for the larger batteries in the iPhone 16 Pro models, but that doesn’t make much sense to us… the increased battery capacity would only be about 2.5% on the iPhone 16 Pro and 5.7% on the Pro Max. Given how charging speeds decrease as the state of charge increases, such modest increases in battery capacity weren’t going to make a huge difference in charging times.
If true, this rumor is great news for anyone considering an iPhone 16 Pro this year. An increase in charging speed to 40W with just a 3-6% increase in battery capacity will mean much faster charging times for those with more powerful USB-C power adapters.
