Vodafone, Qualcomm and Thales have just announced the successful trial of iSIM technology, which differs from eSIM because it integrates the SIM infrastructure into the processor, eliminating the need for a separate physical space for it. This is a fairly important step that would allow manufacturers to expand their possibilities when designing their smartphones. This was implemented in Samsung laboratories in a mobile phone from the Korean manufacturer.
iSIM technology integrated into the processor
iSIM technology has already been successfully deployed on a fully functional smartphone
Adopting this technology allows manufacturers to no need to allocate special space for SIM card inside the mobile, and does not require an independent chip such as eSIM. This can result in thinner phones or better use of space which can be used to improve other components such as battery or memory.
The advantages of this technology do not stop there, since according to the official press release from Qualcomm, the iSIM would also make it possible to integrate telecommunications technology into devices with internet of things,
On the other hand, the company also raised the possibility of remote SIM provisioning by the operators, as well as the elimination of the use of the plastic necessary for the manufacture of these physical cards.
“iSIM solutions offer great opportunities for carriers, free up valuable device space for manufacturers, and provide users with the flexibility to benefit from the full potential of 5G networks and experiences on a diverse range of devices,” said Enrico Salvatori, senior vice president and president of Qualcomm Europe.
This technology has been successfully tested in Europe thanks to the Vodafone network, and a Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 was used for it, the processor of which is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888.
The statement also shows commitment to the application of technology in IoT devices or with the Internet of Things, as well as in laptops, virtual reality platforms, tablets, smartwatches and more, so now it’s the turn of manufacturers.
