SMS scams are very common and although in some cases they are easy to detect, the urgency of the messages can make more than one person fall into the trap. The most common thing in this type of scam is that criminals pretend to be banking entities or courier services and request payment of a certain amount.
This is the case of one of the scams that circulate via SMS. As warned by the National Police and the National Cybersecurity Institute of Europe (INCIBE), a campaign of fraudulent messages pretending to be from the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has recently been detected.
Fraudsters try to create a sense of urgency
Although the content of the SMS may vary, the message alerted by the National Police tells us that we have an unpaid fine of 19 dollars that we must pay as soon as possible, since the amount will increase 24 hours after receiving the message. The SMS includes a link from which we can pay the fine.
Of course, this is not the only SMS we can receive, since this scam has different variants. As the DGT itself recently confirmed in X, Fraudsters send different types of messages to try to lure us into the trap: another of the messages used refers to the fact that this is the “last reminder” before the increase in the amount of the fine.

At this point, it is important to keep in mind that the DGT will never notify us of a fine. neither by SMS nor by email (notification comes by postal mail), so any communication we receive by SMS, email or similar channels regarding a fine will be an attempt at fraud.
Considering all of the above, it is important to take extreme precautions in case you receive a message supposedly from the DGT.
