Very recently, the Google app for mobile payments and savings cards was updated to optimize the latter experience from the same website, and now it’s following somewhat the same path to include a mechanism that will become vital for the use of Google WalletThe application will allow the user to scan and save a digital copy of passes and text-only documents.
Until now, the Google app allowed you to save bank cards or loyalty cards that many establishments now use merchants to add points through the use of the merchant’s application, and thus generate savings or gifts to users who use them.
The new Google Wallet feature has been teased by Android Authority and its operation has been shared. Google already showed it at I/O 2024 in May. Unlike other third-party apps, which allow you to scan this type of documents, Google Wallet will ask for permission to use the data of the user to process them and, in fact, it specifies that the entire process will be carried out locally without any data being sent to Google servers.
Important appreciation, since this new feature will be used to manage certain sensitive data such as a driving license or a passport. Once the authorization is accepted, it will allow you to scan and save two types of documents: one normal and one private.
It should be noted that normal documents, such as a business card, do not require the use of biometric data for identification, but private ones like the driving license or the identity card. And most importantly: the application will automatically identify different types of documents, whether passports, residence permits, driving licenses, metro or train cards, as well as many others such as business cards.
Those that cannot be defined will be assigned to the “Other” category and the user can change it if he deems it necessary because it is poorly identified. Also allows add more data to scanned documents by clicking on the “Add Field” option, and each of the categories supports up to five fields.
Another point to emphasize is that the scanned information is linked to the automatically assigned category, which means that if the category is changed for any reason, the information is lost, data should be re-entered or return to the previously defined category. This new feature is not yet available in the stable version, so it should arrive soon in Europe according to Android Authority.
