It is true that Google Files is one of the file managers that does its job the best. But it’s also true that I’ve been asking for one for a while. visual renewal to make it more in line with the design language that the Mountain View company implements in Android, Material You.
The time has come to welcome this overhaul which Google has just been activated for many users. Now, Google Files dons the “Material” costume to look better than ever. We tested it and we tell you our impressions.
A somewhat materialistic overhaul
Although Google’s official file manager has adhered to Material Design since 2021, now is the time takes its most contemporary form and it integrates seamlessly with the rest of Android’s proprietary company services. This includes a new home screen that shows us the main sections or those that require our intervention.
First, we note that the interface looks cleaner and more modern. All UI elements are based on Material Design 3 (or Material You) will suit the accent color of our wallpaper. At the top, a search bar glows with its own light that will be present at all times.
There are still other changes, such as a Share tab that changes its appearance: now this section that connects us to Nearby Sharing includes more information about the process. Additionally, the two buttons are centered next to an animation demonstrating this feature.
What we cannot say is that new tools or features have been added, since everything goes on like this. As we have seen, this update simply focuses on renewing the design. Concretely, the Google Files compilation that we tested corresponds to version 1.292.525444002. If you don’t have the new design yet, fear not because the changes are coming from the server side.
For our part, we can say that this interface change suits the browser rather well, and we tested it on two Pixel 6a that we have in the newsroom, updated with the May patch. However, we do not know if it was implemented in the rest of mobiles from different Android manufacturers. If not, you just have to wait.
