Defending Jacob is based on a book and initially it was intended to be a movie. However, the showrunner tasked with bringing this project to the small screen, Mark Bomback, felt that to tell the story well the only way to do it was through a miniseries and although there was some speculation. on a second season, Bomback said he was in their plans.
