MacKeeper is a well-known and somewhat controversial name in the Mac world. It has been used in many third party affiliate marketing efforts in the past which has given it a bad reputation, but luckily it is the history of technology and it is long gone.
Now it is under new management and has been independently endorsed by Apple, as well as independent test labs, such as AV-Test, which gave it a 6 out of 6 rating for performance and protection. .
The installation of MacKeeper is very easy; once he Software is installed, you can cycle through the different options for scanning, cleaning, etc., one by one. When you need to authorize the Software In System Preferences, you receive instructions and even buttons that take you to the correct System Preferences panel.
Tools
MacKeeper comes as a set of different functions in a single interface. The Find & Fix process, which runs when the program starts, is a set of scans covering four areas.
These are cleaning, to find and remove junk files and duplicate files; security, to find and eradicate viruses, malware Yes Software unwanted (hijacking browser search tools, etc.); privacy, which checks and monitors databases for password leaks in relation to your email; and performance, which consists of detecting Software with available updates or unnecessary login items.
A “Memory Cleaner” option recovers the RAM that has been recovered by the Software It no longer works and Private Connect adds a VPN to help keep you safe on public Wi-Fi networks.
Friendliness
MacKeeper is a very easy to use tool; it is well organized and the various functions are clear and functional. The left section of the main window lists the tools, grouped into four categories, and the middle section shows the options for the function in use.
In the right part of the window, there is a chat panel that presents a series of tips and comments. It’s a bit heavy on marketing, but it makes some helpful suggestions. You can use it to connect with remote technical support staff if you want specific help, otherwise you can hide it.
Most of the issues you come across can be fixed with a few clicks, and things are presented in a very user-friendly way. The ability to alert when your email is on password cracker lists is a very useful extra, and it detected more of them than expected.
You’ll have to fix the leaked passwords yourself, but it offers links to the relevant sites to get you started.
Some features of MacKeeper are nice to have, but they aren’t as feature rich as the standalone equivalents. A clear example is Private Connect VPN, but these are undeniably useful extras anyway.
Other extras include a duplicate file finder, a tool to free up hard drive space, and the ability to track your Mac’s location and lock it if needed.
Performance
Scans are performed in full each time rather than just looking for new files, but the scan for junk files was reasonably fast. MacKeeper detected potentially harmful software well, even in compromised installers.
Our selection of real adware, browser hijackers and viruses have been identified and the quarantine and removal process has been effective.
There are very few settings available to control the details of how MacKeeper works. This will keep things very easy to understand, but some may want more; there is no acceleration control for background analysis, for example.
If annoying, they can be turned off and MacKeeper can be used to scan files, folders, or drives on demand, but that means giving up automatic protection.
Pricing and availability
MacKeeper 5 costs $ 89.40 for the one-year family plan that covers three Macs. For individual users, the normal annual price is $ 71.40. Unusually, MacKeeper displays monthly prices as a VPN service and offers monthly protection if you really want protection for such a short period of time.
Sign up for MacKeeper 5 on their website.
But, just like with VPN services, if you go for a year of protection, you pay for everything up front. At the time of writing, there was a 30% reduction, bringing the family plan down to $ 62.40 for the first year.
While not the cheapest security tool, it is easy to use and offers a number of benefits.
