Regarding the next version of macOS, the one to replace the current Ventura, we know few details today. But a little over a month after its official presentation at WWDC 2023, there is something to be addressed that still raises bets and excitement: its name.
Last year the leading contender was Mammoth, and no one knew anything about ‘Ventura’ until he spoke to the opening speech. Now we have more candidates and room for more bets in the rumor mill. With all of you, macOS 14 possible names.
What will the next macOS be called? These are Apple’s possible candidates
From the hand by Parker Ortolani we can compile the list of names Apple has licensed, a total (as far as we know) of fifteen. Some of these might be ideal for macOS 14:
- Diablo
- Condor
- Shark
- farallon
- Miramar
- Corner
- Peaceful
- Sequoia
- Shasta
- grizzled
- Horizon
- red tail
- Sonoma
- Sequoia
- Mammoth
There are some of those controversial names that Apple always wants to avoid, like “macOS Diablo.” ‘Mammoth’ has been on this list for years, so 2023 could be your year. And we’re not referring to the prehistoric animal, but to the mountainous region of California that you can see in the header image.
How long before the official presentation of the new version of macOS?
In exactly five weeks we will leave doubts, in any case. It will be then that we meet the chosen one, Mammoth or not. Or we may end up with a totally new taxonomy that has nothing to do with these records.
If they end up casting ‘Mammoth’, my favorites are ‘Redwood’, ‘Redtail’, ‘Sonoma’ and ‘Condor’. It may be one of these names or, like last year, we may end up with a surprise name. The mystery will be solved on June 5, when Craig Federighi will surely present macOS 14 with honors.
