When Microsoft announced Windows 11, no one expected a move like this: installing Android apps on traditional computers. It was quite a surprise and a statement of intent from the company. Still, it’s a test system that has been made available to members of Windows Insider, the company’s beta program.
Now, Microsoft has announced that everyone will have access to a public preview in a few weeks.
In February, Android apps are coming to Windows, albeit in a limited way
It was in a post on the official Windows blog where Panos Panay, the head of this division of the company, explained what will happen next month to the new operating system.
Among the many new features there is one that touches us closely: the installation of Android applications.
So far, only the insiders, users of Microsoft’s test program have had access to installing some under Windows 11, but that will change in February. All Windows 11 users will have access to a public preview which will allow the installation of certain applications on the computer.
It should be noted that this is not a full version since there are still few compatible applications and you still have to go through Amazon’s Android application store, at least in theory. It’s clear that Microsoft is taking matters into its own hands. So much so that it has even given time for apps to come out that make backup copies of Android app installations in Windows.
All in all, it’s another step in a direction that few people imagined they could take a few years ago.
It now remains to be seen if Google takes a step forward in allowing some app compatibility in Windows (beyond the tests it’s doing with Play Games) or if it will leave Amazon alone in the lead on app integration. Android apps with Windows.
