Until recently, the IT sector seemed doomed to take a back seat to smartphones and tablets. But the “post-PC” era has ultimately not arrived and users continue to depend on computers in their daily lives, both at work and in their personal time. Microsoft itself was on the verge of abandoning PCs, betting on new types of dual-screen devices; but with the launch of Windows 11, it recognized where users’ real needs lay. And with Windows 12, this path will continue.
It’s no secret that Windows 12 will likely be released in 2024, and with it will come a new generation of personal computers based on artificial intelligence. Unlike current applications and services, which rely on an external server that actually does the work, These “AI PCs” will be able to run this technology locally
It is Microsoft which will demonstrate the possibilities of this concept; as revealed Windows Centralthe next generation of Surface devices will be presented as “the first true AI PC computers”. All models will bring significant “hardware” changes, unlike previous generations which were more continuous. Indeed, the future of the Surface range was called into question in 2023, when its top manager, Panos Panay, left the company; But at Microsoft, they reiterated that they were going to continue their commitment to “hardware” and that Surfaces were not going to end up the same way as Windows Phones.
This leak seems to put these fears aside, because the changes are numerous and significant. For starters, the new Surface Pro and Surface Laptop will be available with Intel and Qualcomm processors; In the case of the latter, they will be customized versions of the new Snapdragon. The internal name that these devices have received is “CADMUS”, and they have been designed specifically for the next version of Windows. Microsoft could boast of MacBook-like performance and battery life with Apple processors. Models with Intel, meanwhile, would be based on the 14th generation with widespread performance improvements. Whether one chooses a model with Intel or a model with Qualcomm, the device will have a neural processing unit (NPU) for AI.
As for the models that will be presented, the Surface Laptop 6 would be the most different from the current generation. The Microsoft laptop will receive a complete renovation, the first in its history, with a screen with thinner edges and a greater choice of ports. It will be available in two sizes, 13.8 inches and 15 inches, and its keyboard will feature a button to start Windows Copilot, the AI based on the same technology as ChatGPT.
For its part, the Surface Pro 10 will retain the tablet format with a keyboard case, but will receive screen improvements with HDR support and a new anti-reflective coating. The webcam would also improve with a wider viewing angle, and the keyboard would also have a dedicated button for Copilot.
