A study reveals that mobile games are already more important than the gaming industry for PC and game consoles.
A recent Gaming Spotlight 2022 report from data.ai and IDC reveals that mobile games account for 61% of the global games marketwhich will reach 222,000 million dollars in 2022. The study reveals that the potential that mobile games have reached in recent years exceeds the entire “classic” video game industry, centered on video game consoles and computers.
During the year 2021, an increase in the level of mobile game revenues has already been observed and 2022 confirmed this trend, with profits that have increased by 30% if we buy them at pre-pandemic levels.
Mobile games are becoming increasingly relevant
“The report reveals that mobile games will exceed $136 billion in 2022, growing 1.7 times faster than the overall games market. Globally, users downloaded 45% more mobile games per week in the first quarter of 2021 than at pre-pandemic levels, registering over 1.1 billion games per week. In Q1 2022, consumers spent more than $1.6 billion per week on mobile games on iOS and Google Play, up 30% from pre-pandemic levels“.
Mobile games have overtaken classic games
China led growth in the first quarter of 2022, while North America and Western Europe accounted for half of mobile game spending. The report also shows that mobile is democratizing gaming and that mobile genre preferences are more varied, with 8 different subgenres represented among the top 10 games.

Mobile is democratizing the space and is now the main driver of growth in the consumption of digital games. We’re seeing more diversity across game genres, allowing publishers to serve new gamers of all generations and genres.
This popularity also increased live streaming and monetization on platforms like Twitch which “saw accelerated growth in engagement by prioritizing community-building features that foster connection and real-time interactions between game streamers and audiences.”
The The App Store and services like Apple Arcade demonstrate the enormous potential of this market and participate in its growth. The power of smartphones allows us to have games with a level of quality close to that of game consoles, so it is logical that they have grown so much. Almost everyone has a smartphone, but few have a PC or console.
