Nanoleaf Cono, smart lamp with battery and compatible with Matter

We tested the new Nanoleaf Cono smart lamp, with Bluetooth and Matter connectivity that make it compatible with any home automation platformand a battery life of more than five hours that allows you to take it anywhere.

Small, portable and long battery life

Nanoleaf Umbra Cono is a portable lamp of a fairly small size (139x143mm) and a very particular design. The main body has a conical shape (hence its name) but it has an X-shaped base that acts as a foot, handle or support. Available in several colors, the one we were able to test is the Sierra model, in orange-brown color. The entire lamp is made of plastic, from the body to the lampshade.There is no glass anywhere, which in addition to giving it lightness makes it resistant to possible falls or shocks. What it does not have is water resistance even if its appearance would give that impression.

It has a USB-C connection through which it can be recharged (cable included in the box) and a single touch button that serves all the possible functions that one can imagine: turn on, turn off, dim, change color, reset… Everything is done with one touch, two touches, one touch and holding… It is convenient that there is a touch control so that you do not always have to resort to the mobile application to control the light. YesThe autonomy according to the manufacturer is 5 hours, which is curious because in my tests it exceeds these 5 hours a lot.

It has a brightness of 130 lumens, which is not too much for lighting but for decoration, which is its main function. We have warm and cool whites (2700 to 6500 K) and over 16 million colors, with a color rendering index (CRI) of over 90.a high level of color reliability. The colors can be controlled using the physical button but to get the most out of it you have to use the Nanoleaf app or the Home app, although with the latter we will not have access to the animations.

Bluetooth and wire

We can use the lamp without any type of connection, choose the Bluetooth connection (up to 5 lamps can be grouped) or use the Thread connection to join it to our home automation network, which in addition to consuming less battery will allow you to control it from anywhere, even remotely, and integrate it with other lights and devices on your network. Using Matter, you can add it to Apple HomeKit, Google Home or Alexa, you can choose the platform you prefer. Remember that to use Thread you need a device that acts as a Hub, such as the HomePod mini, HomePod 2nd Gen or Apple TV 4K. There are also other Nanoleaf lights that can perform this function, such as lines, elements or shapes.

Editor’s Review

The new Nanoleaf Umbra has a very original design and excellent autonomy, in addition to the great virtue of using Matter to be compatible with any home automation platform and being able to use Bluetooth when there is no internet connection. As a decorative lamp it offers very good results, and the possibility of being able to place it anywhere is a great advantage. However, not being waterproof or not being able to be used to illuminate a small room due to its limited brightness are its main drawbacks. You can buy it from Nanoleaf for $110 (link).
