We tested the new Nanoleaf Lines, modular smart lamps with a completely different design, compatible with HomeKit, Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa, and with advanced features like Screen Mirroring and Music Visualizer.
main Features
The Nanoleaf lines are new smart lamps that take advantage of the brand’s extensive experience in this segment, with several light models that we have analyzed on the blog and the YouTube channel to offer the most advanced smart lighting options with a brand new design. , without losing the extensibility features of Nanoleaf and which make their luminaires the benchmark on the market.
In this analysis, we test the Initiation kit and an extension kit. In the first we have everything necessary for mounting the lighting system. Contains :
- 9 light bars (backlit)
- 9 connections
- 1 controller
- 1 AC adapter (can power up to 18 light sticks)
Items purchased separately can be added to this starter kit, such as the extension kit that we have in this analysis and which includes:
- 3 light bars (backlit)
- 3 connections
Each bar consists of two lighting zones and over 16 million colors. The certification of the lamps is IP20, so they are not suitable to be placed outdoors. Thanks to the connection system used, we can create different designs
They have 2.4 GHz WiFi connectivity (it is not compatible with 5 GHz networks) so you will not have coverage problems in your home. They are also compatible with the new “Thread” technology., that is, if you have compatible devices (more and more HomeKit devices are), they can act as a signal repeater so that you do not need to install bridges or additional centers.
In terms of compatibility, you couldn’t ask for more, as they integrate perfectly with the three main home automation platforms: HomeKit, Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. As with all Nanoleaf lamps, no additional jumpers are required for configuration, everything is done through your main central (in the case of HomeKit, Apple TV or HomePod) and you will have access to all functions, including remote access.
Setup and Operation
Setup is done through the Nanoleaf app following the traditional QR code scanning process. the app asks us for a few more steps to indicate the orientation of the design you made, so you can adjust light effects and other functions to the position you placed the lights in. Once the setup process is complete, the lights will be added in the Nanoleaf app and also in the Casa app.
From the Nanoleaf app, you can control every function of the lights, from downloading available preconfigured designs (the list is endless) to creating your own, as well as configuring light functions such as auto brightness. You have fixed and dynamic designs that change with the beat of the music, something you don’t need any additional apps for, the lights have everything they need, just put on the appropriate design and start playing your favorite music.
From the Casa app, the functionality is much more limited in terms of multicolored patterns. Treat the lights like any other light, and the controls we have are the same, so no multicolors. You can authorize Nanoleaf to create moods with the designs you have configured in your luminaires, a smart way to get around these Home app limitations. What you have are the enormous possibilities that HomeKit automations and room configurations give you.
As well we can control the lights from the physical buttons
In addition to these control modes, we also have an application for our computer, both Windows and macOS, through which we can use “Display Mirroring” or have the lights mirror what’s on the screen, a kind of Ambilight that looks fantastic if you place the lights around your computer screen.
