Netflix has shaped what has been rumored for months: a new cheaper content subscription plan which makes up for its price drop by introducing ads among other limitations. After several increases in monthly fees, the price of 5.49 dollars per month that the plan with advertisements will have in Europe is attractive.
If we stick only to Netflix, there is already a wide debate, but if we compare this new package with the price of Apple TV+, one more variable is added with the prices which deserves a brief comparison. We will see it.
It’s not just the price: there are more benefits
Apple TV + has little content compared to other catalogs of diffusion. It relies more on quality than on quantity, despite the fact that its content offer is gradually expanding. And it makes up for it with a very reasonable price of 4.99 dollars per month, half a euro less than the plan with Netflix ads. But that’s not all:
NETFLIX (basic plan with ads) |
AppleTV+ |
|
---|---|---|
access to content |
Only part of the catalog, there will be content limited to the most expensive packages |
The whole catalog accessible |
broadcast quality |
720p |
4K HDR / Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos |
can it be shared? |
Nope |
Yes, with up to 5 additional people if we configure it in iCloud En Familia |
Advertisement |
Yes, 4 or 5 minutes of commercials of approximately 20 seconds every hour |
No (although there are clean content trailers that can be skipped) |
content download |
Nope |
Yes |
price |
5.49 dollars per month |
4.99 dollars per month or 49.99 dollars per year |
We could settle the debate by saying that yes, Apple TV+ is cheaper because it offers less content, but technically the difference is huge. For 4.99 dollars per month we have 4K HDR quality, the possibility of sharing it with the family and of course: no ads. The differences are too great to ignore..
The advantage we will have with the Netflix package is that its catalog is wider, although it remains to be seen which series and which films are reserved for the most expensive subscriptions. In other words: when the price of your plan with advertisements is more expensive than the single plan which contains all the advantages of a competitor like Apple, there is something that does not quite fit.
we will see it November 10 from 5 p.m., when this plan with ads is released and the first subscribers who opt in, check what percentage of the catalog they can access. Meanwhile, market research continues to indicate that Apple TV+ is growing slowly but surely. JustWatch already estimates that it has a 7% market share in the United States.
