Netflix has just made another controversial decision and is removing the basic ad-free plan from its subscription options.
Just a few months ago, Netflix included among its options a new cheaper plan in exchange for viewing ads. Oddly enough, Netflix became popular for being an ad-free platform, but it ended up following the same strategy as conventional television. But it doesn’t stop there It seems that Netflix wants all of its customers to see ads.unless they pay more money on their subscription.
This intention was already seen a few weeks ago when we told you that the strategy that Netflix was following was to hide its basic plan so that more people opt for the plan with advertisements. But now the company has been more radical, completely remove the basic plan from options, forcing you to subscribe to the standard plan with ads or pay more for the most expensive subscriptions.
Netflix makes another controversial decision
Netflix removes the basic ad-free plan from its options
For now, Netflix has removed the basic plan only in Canada, where it is no longer part of the options available to new users. The company didn’t provide details on the decision, whether it’s something permanent, whether it will expand to more countries or what will happen to current Basic Plan subscribers.
In most countries, Netflix currently offers four different subscription plans: Standard with ads, Basic, Standard and Premium. In USA the prices are 5.49, 7.99, 12.99 and 17.99 dollars per month. But a trial seems to have started in Canada which could be extended to other countries soon.
| STANDARD WITH ADS | BASIC | STANDARD | PRIME |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5.49 dollars per month | $7.99 per month | 12.99 dollars per month | $17.99 per month |
| Announcements of 4 to 5 minutes per hour | no ads | no ads | no ads |
| Up to Full HD 1080p | Up to HD 720p | Up to Full HD 1080p | Hasta Ultra HD 4K |
If Netflix removes the current basic plan, we would only have 3 subscription options, one basic with ads and two more expensive options with ads. If this strategy is extended to USA, If you do not want to see ads on Netflix, you will go from 7.99 dollars per month for the Basic plan to 12.99 dollars per month for the Standard plan.. That’s 5 dollars more per month.
This strategy is in addition to the previous one of prohibiting the sharing of Netflix passwords, which caused the platform to lose many users. It’s a controversial new decision, but Looks like Netflix needs to keep increasing its revenue even if, in doing so, you make decisions that few users understand.
