Taking advantage of the start of the holiday month par excellence, Google has unveiled many new features in two of its reference applications: Google Maps and Waze. Both are potentially assimilated to changes related to the traffic incidentsradars and speed cameras, navigation with lock screen and much more.
There can only be one, in the car there must be a winner when choosing a GPS navigator. Some prefer Waze for its active community of users, others prefer Google Maps for its route interface and library of places. Are you not clear? Well Google plans to unify the experienceall this so that they are not only more uniform applications, but also much more complete.
Radar incidents and alerts for all
Choosing one or the other is usually a matter of taste and whim, because, ultimately, Google maintains communicating vessels between the two applications. Google Maps has been feeding off user-reported incidents for years, Waze has improved its voice guidance and online services. Everyone wins.
Now, as Google itself has announced, Maps and Waze are going to the next level to improve safety on the road and provide more accurate and efficient information. To do this, they are introducing the following changes, some already anticipated a few weeks ago:
- Incident Report in Google Maps. It makes it easy to report road incidents such as construction, lane closures, objects on the road, and police presence on the road. Reviews are shared by the Google Maps and Waze community.
- New destination guide on Google Maps. The app will show nearby buildings and parking lots as we approach the destination. It will soon be available on Android, iPhone, Android Auto, cars with Google built-in and Apple CarPlay.
- New traffic camera alerts in Waze. The app will quickly alert you when you are near a traffic camera that detects excessive speed, wrong lane usage, and other violations. Waze will display a new lower floating window with the distance to the camera.
- Waze will allow you to share traffic information in real time. That on our route we see blocked streets, traffic jams or other incidents that affect traffic? We can share this information with our friends so that they are aware during their next trip.
- Navigating with a lock screen in Waze. You no longer need to unlock your phone to get directions from Waze: the app works with the screen locked. This allows you to receive directions, traffic updates and alerts, for example. It is now available on Android and will come to iPhone later.
Google has turbocharged its GPS navigation apps, always keeping control and safety behind the wheel. And with greater uniformity: Maps and Waze consume more of each other’s data. With a notable advantage: whichever one we use, we will receive in real time all the incidents that occur on our route, including radars.
